Access to Village Mosque Blocked in Chandpur Property Standoff

A long-standing land dispute in Chandpur’s Matlab Uttar upazila reached a flashpoint when a local resident constructed a bamboo barricade across the primary entrance of a village mosque, severely restricting physical access for worshippers. The incident, which unfolded at the Bhuiyakandi Dakshinpara Baitul Aman Jame Mosque within Durgapur Union, has left local villagers struggling to perform their daily congregational prayers.

The history of the religious site extends back to 1982, when three brothers—Shafiqul Islam, Rafiqul Islam, and Monir Hossain—agreed to jointly donate three decimals of land to establish a place of worship for the local community. To resolve land record discrepancies and support further development, Shafiqul and Monir subsequently donated an additional decimal of land. Supported by contributions from nearby households, the community gradually built a permanent concrete structure where services ran smoothly for decades.

Relations have deteriorated significantly over the past eight years, with committee members accusing Rafiqul Islam of repeatedly disrupting construction and maintenance efforts. Local residents also alleged that he previously felled trees within the mosque grounds without committee authorization. The disagreement culminated on Monday morning when congregants arriving for daily prayers discovered a freshly erected bamboo fence barring the main gate.

The physical barrier caused immediate distress among worshippers, particularly elderly residents who found navigating around the obstruction exceptionally difficult. Sahanur Alam, general secretary of the mosque management committee, expressed concern over the disruption to routine religious services and called for immediate intervention from local law enforcement and administrative bodies.

Idris Ali Pradhan, president of the management committee, explained that while the permanent building was constructed using communal donations on the gifted plot, Rafiqul recently claimed that part of the building encroaches onto his personal land. Although community leaders attempted to organize a mediation session with the three brothers to examine the property documents, the dialogue stalled before any formal resolution could be reached.

Defending his actions, Mohammad Rafiqul Islam rejected accusations of spiteful conduct, insisting that the fence was erected strictly within his private land boundary. He claimed that portions of both the interior and exterior areas of the mosque lie within his legal plot line, adding that members of the management committee had previously threatened to banish him from the venue. Rafiqul confirmed he has submitted a written complaint to the local police station to protect his property rights.

Matlab Uttar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mahmuda Kulsum Moni stated that local authorities view the obstruction of religious institutions or public access routes with absolute seriousness. She confirmed that administration officials will invite both parties for formal talks to achieve a peaceful and lawful resolution once official communications are filed. Boundary disputes involving communal places of worship remain a recurring issue in rural Bangladesh, where informal land grants and outdated documentation frequently lead to legal standoffs between private landowners and village committees.
