Ailing Measles Outbreak Continues to Claim Young Lives

Bangladesh’s measles outbreak remains at an alarming level, with health authorities reporting three more child deaths linked to measles and its symptoms over the past 24 hours, alongside 872 new suspected infections. As the number of cases and fatalities continues to rise, public health experts have renewed calls for stronger immunisation efforts, earlier diagnosis, prompt treatment and greater public awareness to contain the spread of the highly contagious disease.

The latest figures were released on Saturday, 1 August, by the Health Emergency Operations Centre and Control Room under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

According to the official update, the three children who died between 8:00 a.m. on Friday and 8:00 a.m. on Saturday were reported to have exhibited symptoms consistent with measles. None of the deaths during this reporting period had been laboratory-confirmed as measles cases before death. The deceased children were from the Sylhet, Mymensingh and Rangpur divisions.

Since the outbreak began on 15 March this year, the country has recorded a total of 840 child deaths associated with measles and suspected measles over a period of 139 days. Of these, 744 children died after developing measles-like symptoms, while 96 deaths occurred among patients whose infections had been confirmed through laboratory testing.

Health experts believe the significantly higher number of symptom-based deaths suggests that many children are reaching healthcare facilities only after developing severe complications or before laboratory confirmation can be completed. They warn that delayed medical attention may be contributing to the growing death toll.

During the latest 24-hour reporting period, 687 of the 872 newly reported patients required hospital admission. At the same time, 538 children were discharged after completing treatment, indicating that a substantial number of patients remain under medical care across hospitals nationwide.

Official statistics show that, from 15 March until Saturday morning, Bangladesh recorded 129,061 suspected measles cases. Laboratory testing confirmed 16,180 infections during the same period. A total of 111,674 patients required hospitalisation, while 107,397 recovered sufficiently to be discharged.

These figures illustrate the considerable pressure the outbreak continues to place on the country’s healthcare system, particularly paediatric services that are treating large numbers of young patients.

Measles is one of the world’s most infectious viral diseases and poses the greatest risk to children under the age of five. The virus spreads rapidly through respiratory droplets released when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Common symptoms include high fever, cough, runny nose, red or watery eyes, and a widespread red rash.

Medical specialists caution that untreated measles can lead to life-threatening complications, including pneumonia, severe diarrhoea, malnutrition and inflammation of the brain. Young children, particularly those who are unvaccinated or have weakened immune systems, face the highest risk of severe illness.

Public health specialists continue to stress that timely vaccination with the measles-rubella vaccine remains the most effective way to prevent infection and reduce serious complications. They also recommend seeking immediate medical attention when a child develops fever or a suspected measles rash, isolating infected patients where appropriate, and following infection prevention measures to reduce community transmission.

In light of the continuing outbreak, the DGHS has urged parents and caregivers not to delay seeking medical care if children develop symptoms suggestive of measles. Health officials have also encouraged families to ensure children receive routine vaccinations according to the national immunisation schedule, describing high vaccine coverage, early treatment and public cooperation as essential to reducing infections and preventing further child deaths.
