Saheb Ali, described by police as a notorious robbery gang leader, has been shot dead in Siddhirganj, Narayanganj. The shooting took place at around 6pm on Monday, 12 October, in front of Al Ittihad Tower near Boubazar, in Ward 4 of Narayanganj City Corporation.
Mohammad Emdadul Haque, officer-in-charge of Siddhirganj Police Station, confirmed Ali’s death.
According to eyewitness accounts, two men identified as local resident Roni and a painter named Aslam, who were reportedly associates of Ali, met him in the Boubazar area at around 6pm. They allegedly opened fire on him following a longstanding dispute. Bullets struck Ali in the head and chest, leaving him critically injured and causing severe blood loss.
Local residents rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for emergency treatment. However, doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The precise circumstances leading to the shooting, including the nature of the alleged dispute and what happened immediately before the attack, have not been established in the information available.
Police confirm death, cite multiple cases
Siddhirganj police chief Mohammad Emdadul Haque said Ali had been shot in the head and was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in a critical condition, where doctors pronounced him dead.
The officer also said that at least 20 cases had been filed against Ali at different police stations. Details of the allegations in those cases, their current legal status and whether any had resulted in convictions were not immediately available.
The existence of multiple cases against a person does not, by itself, establish guilt in every instance. Each allegation must be assessed through the relevant legal process.
Investigation needed to establish motive
The reported involvement of two men described as Ali’s associates has raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the killing. According to eyewitness accounts, the shooting followed a dispute, but the available information does not independently establish the motive or confirm the precise roles of those named.
Investigators will need to establish the sequence of events, examine available evidence and determine who was responsible for the attack. Any criminal liability will ultimately depend on the evidence gathered and the applicable legal process.
Siddhirganj is part of the densely populated Narayanganj urban area, where incidents involving firearms can cause alarm among residents and bystanders. A shooting in a public place also raises questions about public safety and the need for an effective police response.
Further information about arrests, a formal case in connection with the killing or subsequent investigative developments was not available at the time of reporting.
