Alleged Crime Figure ‘Red Munna’ Arrested in Pallabi

Police have arrested an alleged notorious criminal known as “Red Munna” during a special operation in Dhaka’s Pallabi area, recovering a sharp knife from his possession, according to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

The suspect, identified as Munna, also known as Red Munna, 36, was apprehended on Saturday afternoon in the Bauniabad Muchipara area under Pallabi Police Station following what police described as an intelligence-based operation.

The arrest was confirmed by DMP Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Media and Public Relations) Niaz Mehedi, who said officers acted on confidential information regarding the suspect’s whereabouts before conducting the raid.

According to police, a team from Pallabi Police Station carried out the operation in Section 11 of Bauniabad Muchipara, where Munna was arrested without incident. During the search, officers recovered a sharp knife allegedly in his possession.

Police described the suspect as an alleged leading criminal figure who had long been involved in mugging, extortion and other criminal activities in the area. Investigators claim he had been operating in the locality for an extended period, creating concern among residents and posing a challenge to local law enforcement efforts.

The DMP said Munna has 10 cases registered against him with Pallabi Police Station. The pending cases include allegations of narcotics offences, extortion, theft, assault, attempted murder, and violence against women and children. Police said all of the cases are currently under judicial process.

Authorities did not specify whether Saturday’s operation was linked to a particular criminal case or whether additional charges would be brought following the recovery of the weapon. The suspect is expected to be produced before the appropriate court, where investigators are likely to seek further legal action in accordance with the existing cases and the findings of the ongoing investigation.

Intelligence-led operations such as the one conducted in Pallabi form part of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s wider strategy to combat organised crime and improve public security across the capital. Law enforcement agencies regularly carry out targeted raids in areas considered vulnerable to criminal activity in an effort to apprehend wanted suspects, recover illegal weapons and disrupt criminal networks.

Police say such operations are based on information gathered through surveillance, public complaints and intelligence sources. Areas with recurring reports of mugging, extortion and other street crimes often receive increased patrols and targeted enforcement measures to discourage repeat offences and reassure local residents.

Officials believe sustained policing operations, coupled with community cooperation, are essential to reducing crime in densely populated urban neighbourhoods. They have encouraged citizens to share information about suspicious activities so that law enforcement agencies can respond promptly and prevent criminal incidents.

The DMP reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order across the capital through regular enforcement drives and intelligence-based operations. Police said similar crackdowns would continue in Pallabi and other parts of Dhaka as part of ongoing efforts to bring individuals accused of criminal offences before the courts and strengthen public safety.

The investigation into Munna’s activities remains ongoing, and authorities indicated that further legal proceedings will be determined in accordance with the evidence gathered and the judicial process relating to the cases already pending against him.
