Armed Mob Attacks Railway Police Outpost in Gazipur, Injuring Two

Two police officers were injured when a group of armed men allegedly attacked the Joydebpur Railway Police Outpost in Gazipur on Thursday, 15 October, in an attempt to free a man and a woman detained in a drug-related case.

The attack took place at around 5.15pm, according to police. The injured officers were identified as TSI Nurul Islam and Constable Ashik. Both reportedly sustained serious injuries during the incident.

Police said the attackers, allegedly associates of the two detainees, arrived carrying locally made weapons, including machetes and curved blades. They reportedly broke down the entrance to the outpost and forced their way inside in an attempt to release the detained pair.

Several videos circulating on social media appeared to show a group of around 40 to 50 people surrounding the police outpost while carrying weapons such as machetes, cleavers and knives. The footage also appeared to show vandalism inside the outpost and attacks on nearby structures. The identities of those seen in the videos, as well as the extent of each individual’s involvement, have yet to be established through an official investigation.

Drug Raid Preceded the Attack

Joydebpur Railway Police Outpost came under attack after police detained the two individuals during an operation near Joydebpur Railway Junction.

Zainal Abedin, officer-in-charge of Dhaka Railway Police Station, said police had received confidential information that drugs were being sold on the southern side of the railway junction. Acting on the tip-off, police personnel and security staff on duty at the station conducted an operation in the area.

During the operation, they detained a woman and a man along with suspected drugs, before taking them to the Joydebpur Railway Police Outpost for further legal proceedings.

According to Abedin, the detainees’ associates subsequently arrived at the outpost armed with locally made weapons and attempted to secure their release by force. The attack left TSI Nurul Islam and Constable Ashik seriously injured.

The incident highlights the security challenges that can arise when suspects are detained during anti-drug operations, particularly when groups attempt to interfere with police custody. An attack on a police facility can also disrupt routine duties and expose officers and others present to the risk of further violence.

However, the precise circumstances surrounding the confrontation, including who organised the attack and how many people took part, will need to be established through investigation.

Videos May Assist the Investigation

The circulation of several videos on social media has drawn attention to the scale of the reported attack. The footage appears to show a sizeable group carrying weapons and damaging property in and around the outpost.

Such recordings may provide investigators with material to examine when identifying those involved. Their evidential value, however, will depend on verification of the footage, including its location, timing and the identities of the people shown. Appearance in a video alone would not establish an individual’s responsibility for a criminal offence.

Police have not provided a detailed breakdown of the damage to the outpost or nearby structures. Further information about the treatment of the injured officers was also not immediately available.

Separate Cases Being Prepared

Abedin said police were preparing to file separate cases against those involved in the attack, including charges relating to assaulting police officers and offences under drug-control legislation.

The proposed legal action is intended to address both the alleged violence against police personnel and the drug-related case that led to the initial arrests. Investigators will need to establish the identities and respective roles of those who took part in the incident, as well as gather evidence supporting any charges.

Police had not immediately disclosed whether anyone had been arrested in connection with the attack or whether the two detainees remained in custody following the incident.

The case is expected to proceed through the relevant legal process as investigators examine the allegations and available evidence. The police account suggests that the immediate aim of the attack was to free the detained man and woman, but the full circumstances and the responsibility of those involved remain matters for investigation.
