Two serving female Union Parishad (UP) members have been arrested by the District Detective Branch (DB) of police in Rajbari after being caught with 30 contraband Yaba tablets during a targeted operation.
The arrests were confirmed late on Tuesday night by Md Mofizul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Rajbari DB Police. The suspects have been identified as Mst Hamida Khatun, 47, wife of Abdul Mannan Mondal from Mohanpur village, and Sajeda Begum, 40, wife of Kadar Ali Mondal from Char Kultia village. Both women serve as elected public representatives in the Majhbari Union Parishad under Kalukhali Upazila. Hamida Khatun holds the reserved member seat representing Wards 1, 2, and 3, while Sajeda Begum serves as the reserved ward member for Wards 7, 8, and 9.
According to operational details released by detective officials, a special team led by Sub-Inspector (SI) Shimul Sheikh was conducting an anti-narcotics drive within the jurisdiction of Pangsha Model Police Station on Tuesday afternoon. Acting on specific intelligence regarding narcotics movement, detectives intercepted the two public representatives along a paved road directly opposite the Wood Ward Furniture store on College Road in Pangsha Municipality. A search of their possessions yielded 30 Yaba tablets—a potent synthetic combination of methamphetamine and caffeine—leading to their immediate detention.
Rajbari DB Police OC Md Mofizul Islam stated that formal criminal charges have been registered against both councillors under the Narcotics Control Act. Law enforcement personnel are completing preliminary interrogations before producing the accused before the local magistracy court.
The sudden arrest of two elected local representatives has caused considerable shock across the district, highlighting the pervasive reach of illicit narcotics into local government structures. Reacting to the development, Kazi Shariful Islam, Chairman of Majhbari Union Parishad, acknowledged learning about the arrests through local news channels. However, he clarified that the parishad has not yet received official written communication from law enforcement or local government administration regarding their formal legal status or pending prosecution. Police authorities reaffirmed their commitment to enforcing zero-tolerance narcotics policies, emphasizing that anti-drug operations will proceed rigorously regardless of the political affiliation or public status of those involved.
