Brazil Victory Celebration Dispute Turns Fatal in Dhaka

A local leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was fatally attacked in Dhaka’s Adabor area following a violent dispute that police say stemmed from celebrations after Brazil’s victory in the Football World Cup. Law enforcement agencies have detained 10 suspects in connection with the killing as the investigation continues.

According to police, the victim, 45-year-old Abul Bashar, died after being attacked with sharp weapons during clashes on Wednesday night. The arrests were made during separate operations conducted across the capital on Thursday and Friday.

Mohammad Jewel Rana, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police for Mohammadpur and Adabor under the Tejgaon Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said three suspects were detained from Nobodoy Housing in Adabor on Thursday afternoon. The detainees have been identified as Shoaib, Arman and Nayan, and are currently being questioned by investigators.

He added that Bashar’s family had travelled to their ancestral home to bury him and would file a murder case with Adabor Police Station after returning to Dhaka. The three detainees are expected to be formally shown as arrested in that case. Police also confirmed that four additional suspects had been detained by the Detective Branch (DB) of the DMP, while the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) had taken three others into custody, bringing the total number of detainees to ten.

The DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division has announced that a press briefing will be held regarding the four suspects detained by the Detective Branch.

Police said the chain of events began on Tuesday night during celebrations following Brazil’s victory over Japan in the Football World Cup. According to investigators, several local teenagers were celebrating the win by playing drums and blowing whistles in the neighbourhood. During the festivities, a man identified as Habib allegedly assaulted a young man named Nirab, triggering tensions within the local community.

Investigators said the dispute escalated the following day when Saddam Hossain, 35, president of the Adabor Unit BNP, allegedly confronted Nirab again in the Nobodoy Housing market area and assaulted him. He has also been accused of attempting to forcibly take Nirab away. Senior local BNP figures reportedly intervened in an effort to settle the dispute before it spiralled further.

A community arbitration meeting was subsequently held on Wednesday night at Habib’s office in Nobodoy Kacha Bazar in an attempt to resolve the conflict. Police said that after the meeting ended, Saddam and his supporters allegedly tried to attack Nirab and his elder brother Ripon, leading to a chase and counter-chase between the opposing groups.

During the ensuing violence, both Saddam Hossain and Abul Bashar, who served as General Secretary of the Adabor Unit BNP and was also known locally as Badshah, sustained serious injuries after being struck with sharp weapons. They were initially taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital before being transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.

Doctors at Dhaka Medical College Hospital declared Bashar dead at approximately 11:45 p.m. on Wednesday night. Saddam remains hospitalised and is undergoing treatment.

Police said Saddam had submitted a written complaint to Adabor Police Station even before Wednesday night’s attack. Investigators are examining the roles of all individuals involved and are working to determine the sequence of events that ultimately led to the deadly confrontation.

Family members said Bashar worked as a private car driver and was actively involved in local BNP politics as the General Secretary of the Nobodoy Housing Unit in Adabor. Originally from Nandail Upazila in Mymensingh District, he lived with his family in a rented house in Adabor’s B Block. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.

Police have indicated that the investigation remains ongoing and that further legal action will depend on the findings gathered through questioning, witness statements and other evidence collected during the inquiry.
