Canal Body Sparks Police Probe

In the coastal district of Chattogram, an unidentified, partially decomposed body of a man has been recovered from a canal in Patiya Upazila, triggering concern and speculation among local residents.

The recovery was made on Tuesday around 11:00 a.m. from the Chanakhali canal near Shakyamuni Buddhist monastery in Bhati Khaine Union. Acting swiftly on information received through the national emergency helpline 999, police reached the scene and retrieved the body from the water.

According to local accounts, a fisherman went to the canal early in the morning to cast his net. While pulling it back, he noticed something unusual entangled in it. On closer inspection, he discovered a human body floating in a highly decomposed state. Shocked by the sight, he immediately alerted emergency services rather than attempting further handling of the scene.

Police later confirmed that the body was already in an advanced stage of decomposition, suggesting that the deceased had likely been in the water for approximately five to six days. Due to prolonged submersion, visible injuries or distinguishing features could not be clearly identified at the scene, complicating immediate identification efforts.

Authorities stated that the deceased appears to be a man aged between 45 and 50 years. He was reportedly wearing a white shirt at the time of recovery. However, no identification documents were found with the body.

Following the recovery, police secured the area and initiated an inquest. The body was subsequently prepared for transfer to the morgue at Chittagong Medical College Hospital for autopsy. Officials believe that the post-mortem examination will be crucial in determining the exact cause of death, including whether foul play was involved.

A preliminary investigation has already been launched. Law enforcement officers are now reviewing lists of missing persons reported in surrounding areas, while also collecting information from local residents and fishermen who frequent the canal.
