Chhatra League Leader Jannatul Ferdous Arrested in Barlekha

A local leader of the student wing has been arrested and remanded in judicial custody under the Anti-Terrorism Act following a series of legal proceedings in the Moulvibazar district. The suspect, identified as twenty-eight-year-old Jannatul Ferdous Chowdhury, was detained by law enforcement officers on a Sunday afternoon before being presented before the court.
According to local reports and police accounts, the sequence of events began on a Saturday morning during national remembrance observances. Marking the anniversary of the death of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Jannatul Ferdous reportedly visited the Bhataiya Government Primary School, situated adjacent to her residence. During her visit, she placed floral tributes at a portrait of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. However, controversy arose when she allegedly hoisted a black flag alongside the national flag. Following the observance, she captured photographs and video footage of the activities and uploaded them to her personal social media account, where the content quickly drew public attention.
Upon noticing the online circulation of the material, police units acted swiftly. Officers traced her location and apprehended her at her home in Kulaura upazila late Saturday afternoon. Following her initial detention, she was transferred to the custody of the Barlekha police station on Saturday night for further processing. By Sunday afternoon, she was produced before the Barlekha Senior Judicial Magistrate Court, where the presiding magistrate rejected her bail application and ordered her detention in jail.
Jannatul Ferdous Chowdhury is a resident of Bhataiya village in Kulaura upazila and is the daughter of the late Abdul Musabbir Chowdhury. Within local political circles, she is also recognized as the younger sister of Fateha Ferdous Chowdhury Popi, who previously served as the female vice-chairperson of the Kulaura Upazila Parishad and held a leadership role within the local women’s wing of the ruling political formation.
Beyond the weekend incident, investigators revealed that her arrest is tied to a prior case registered last year. On the night of 11 April 2025, a flash procession was staged by student wing activists in front of the Upazila Livestock Office located within the Barlekha municipal area. Participants during the demonstration chanted various political slogans and proceeded to deface the boundary walls of the livestock office with political graffiti. In response to the vandalism and unauthorised gathering, the police filed a formal case under the Anti-Terrorism Act at the Barlekha police station on 12 April 2025. The initial first information report named fifteen specific individuals and included between one hundred and forty to one hundred and fifty unidentified suspects.
Subsequent police investigations into the 2025 demonstration and wall-writing incident uncovered evidence implicating Jannatul Ferdous Chowdhury. Confirming these details to the media on a Monday afternoon, Barlekha Police Station Investigation Officer Obaidul Islam stated that her involvement in the previous anti-terrorism case was verified through inquiry. Consequently, she was formally shown arrested in connection with the earlier case and handed over to the judiciary on Sunday afternoon as the investigation continues.
