Chunarughat Chhatra League Leader Arrested Under Anti-Terrorism Law

Police in Habiganj have arrested Russell Mia, 27, president of the Chunarughat upazila unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra League, in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

He was arrested at around 1.45am on Tuesday, 18 August, from the Aiton-Syedabad area of Chunarughat. Police said the arrest followed a late-night operation based on confidential information.

According to police, a team from Chunarughat Police Station conducted an operation in the Syedabad area during the early hours. Russell was detained during the operation and subsequently shown arrested in a case filed at Chunarughat Police Station on the night of 14 August under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Mohammad Saiful Islam, officer-in-charge of Chunarughat Police Station, confirmed the arrest. He said Russell was taken into custody as part of the investigation into the case and the ensuing legal process. Police also claimed that several other cases had previously been filed against him at the same police station.

The officer said the arrest was made against the backdrop of concerns over law and order and public safety in the area. Police are now taking further legal steps in accordance with the relevant provisions of the law.

However, the specific allegations contained in the 14 August case have not been fully detailed in the information available so far. It is also not immediately clear what particular activities have been alleged against Russell or the nature and status of the other cases reportedly pending against him.

Those details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses. Allegations made in a criminal case do not, by themselves, establish guilt. Their validity must ultimately be determined through the judicial process and in accordance with the evidence presented before the court.

The arrest of a local political organisation leader is likely to attract attention in the area, particularly when police cite concerns about public security and law and order. Nevertheless, the circumstances surrounding the case need to be assessed on the basis of verified information rather than speculation.

Russell’s side has not yet made any immediate public statement regarding the allegations or his arrest. As a result, there is currently no response from him or his representatives to balance the claims made by the police.

Following the arrest, investigators are expected to examine the allegations set out in the case and collect relevant evidence as part of the investigation. The subsequent legal proceedings will determine how the case develops, including any decision by the court regarding further action.

Police said the legal process against Russell remains under way. Until the investigation is completed and the allegations are examined through the courts, no final conclusion can be drawn regarding his culpability.
