The World Cup may be over, but football fans will not have to wait long for the return of top-level club action. After an eagerly anticipated tournament that was staged for the first time with 48 teams and lasted for nearly a month and a half, attention is now turning towards the new European domestic season.
The international chapter concluded with Spain defeating Argentina in the World Cup final to lift the trophy. For the stars who featured in the tournament, however, the break will be brief. The 2026–27 campaigns in Europe’s five leading domestic leagues are scheduled to begin in August, giving supporters another chance to follow their favourite clubs after the excitement of the World Cup.
La Liga will be the first of the major European leagues to return. The new Spanish season is scheduled to begin on 15 August, with Alavés hosting Getafe in the opening fixture. The match is set to kick off at 11.30pm Bangladesh time.
A week later, on 22 August, three more major leagues will get under way on the same day: the English Premier League, France’s Ligue 1 and Italy’s Serie A.
The Premier League season will begin with reigning champions Arsenal facing Coventry City at home. The opening match is scheduled for 1am Bangladesh time. Arsenal will enter the campaign with the added pressure that comes with being defending champions, while Coventry City will face one of the toughest possible challenges at the start of the new season.
In Ligue 1, Olympique de Marseille will welcome Strasbourg at 12.45am Bangladesh time on the same day. The fixture will mark the beginning of another season of competition in France’s top flight.
Serie A will also return on 22 August. At 10.30pm Bangladesh time, Udinese will face Como, while reigning champions Inter Milan will take on Monza. The presence of the defending champions on the opening day is likely to add further interest to the start of the Italian campaign.
Germany’s Bundesliga will be the last of Europe’s five major leagues to begin its new season. The competition is scheduled to start on 29 August, with reigning champions Bayern Munich taking on Stuttgart at 12.30am Bangladesh time.
The return of domestic football means supporters can now shift their focus from international competition to the familiar rivalries of club football. The new season will bring fresh title races, renewed competition and the return of regular league action across Europe’s biggest footballing nations.
For players who have just completed an intense World Cup campaign, the transition from international duty to club football will also be closely watched. Their performances, along with those of their respective teams, will help shape the early weeks of the 2026–27 season.
