Bangladesh has recorded one more fatality from dengue fever in the past 24 hours, bringing the national death toll for the current year to 39. During the same period, 450 new patients were admitted to various hospitals across the country with mosquito-borne viral infections.

The latest update was released on Thursday, 23 July, through a official press bulletin issued by the Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Geographical Breakdown of New Hospital Admissions

The surge in hospitalisations reflects a widespread distribution of cases, though the capital and surrounding areas remain the heavily affected zone. Of the 450 newly admitted patients across the country over the last 24 hours, the division-wise distribution stands as follows:

• Dhaka Division: 195 patients

• Khulna Division: 66 patients

• Barishal Division: 64 patients

• Chittagong Division: 51 patients

• Rangpur Division: 44 patients

• Mymensingh Division: 19 patients

• Rajshahi Division: 11 patients

According to the official figures released by health authorities, total hospital admissions for dengue since the beginning of the year have now climbed to 12,020. On a positive note, 10,911 patients have successfully recovered and been discharged from healthcare facilities across Bangladesh during the same timeframe.

Contextualising the Annual Vector-Borne Threat

Dengue fever, transmitted primarily by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, continues to pose a persistent public health challenge in Bangladesh. The disease peaks during the monsoon season when standing rainwater creates ideal breeding environments for mosquitoes in urban and suburban centers.

While the current cumulative figures for 2026 reflect ongoing vigilance, health experts emphasize comparing these trends against historical data to gauge seasonal intensity. In 2025, Bangladesh registered a total of 102,861 dengue hospitalisations, with the virus claiming 413 lives nationwide.

Medical professionals point out that early diagnosis and timely fluid management are crucial to preventing severe complications, such as Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever or Dengue Shock Syndrome. Health officials have urged citizens to eliminate stagnant water containers around homes, use bed nets, and seek medical evaluation at the onset of high fever, joint pain, or rash. Municipal authorities across major divisions are under increasing pressure to accelerate fogging operations and larvicidal sprays to curb vector populations before the height of the monsoon season.
