Dengue Claims Two More Lives as 327 Hospitalised

Bangladesh has recorded two more deaths from dengue fever in the past 24 hours, while 327 new patients have been admitted to hospitals across the country with the mosquito-borne disease, according to the latest data released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

With the latest fatalities, the official death toll from dengue has risen to 27 since the beginning of this year. Nine of these deaths occurred during the first 12 days of July alone, reflecting a concerning rise in infections during the ongoing monsoon season, when stagnant water creates favourable breeding conditions for Aedes mosquitoes.

In its latest bulletin issued on Monday, the DGHS said the two patients who died between 8am on Sunday and 8am the following day were from Dhaka and Chattogram divisions. During the same period, Dhaka division reported the highest number of new admissions, with 142 dengue patients requiring hospital treatment.

At present, 296 dengue patients are receiving medical care in hospitals across Dhaka division. The division has also recorded the highest number of dengue-related deaths this year, with 12 fatalities reported so far.

Barishal division recorded the second-highest number of new admissions during the latest 24-hour period, with 61 patients hospitalised. A total of 197 dengue patients are currently undergoing treatment in hospitals across the division.

The situation in the capital remains a major concern as well. According to the DGHS bulletin, hospitals under the Dhaka North City Corporation area admitted 38 new dengue patients in the past 24 hours, while hospitals in the Dhaka South City Corporation area reported 43 admissions. Another 61 patients were admitted to hospitals outside the two city corporation areas of Dhaka.

Despite the continued rise in new infections, many patients have recovered. During the same 24-hour period, 230 dengue patients were discharged from hospitals after receiving treatment.

Since 1 January, a total of 8,650 people have been hospitalised with dengue across Bangladesh, according to health authorities. Among them, 7,800 patients have recovered and returned home, while several hundred remain under medical observation and treatment.

Health experts have repeatedly urged people to remain cautious during the rainy season, as Aedes mosquitoes tend to multiply rapidly in areas where clean stagnant water accumulates. They have advised households and communities to regularly remove standing water from containers, rooftops, flower pots and other potential breeding sites.

Doctors have also stressed the importance of seeking medical attention early if symptoms such as persistent fever, severe headache, body pain, nausea, or weakness appear, as timely diagnosis and proper management can reduce the risk of serious complications. With dengue cases continuing to increase, health authorities are focusing on prevention measures and public awareness campaigns to control further spread of the disease.
