Journalists Assaulted and Robbed During Assignment in Kushtia

Two journalists representing the Kushtia-published daily newspaper Dainik Khaborwala were subjected to a sudden assault by a group of miscreants whilst performing their professional duties. The incident took place in the East Mojampur area within Ward No. 18 of Kushtia Municipality.

During the confrontation, one of the journalists sustained severe injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment at the Kushtia 250-Bed General Hospital. In addition to physical violence, the assailants reportedly looted professional equipment and cash from the scene, with the total value of the stolen assets estimated at 184,932 Bangladeshi Taka (BDT).

Incident Dynamics and Contextual Background

The violent encounter occurred on Wednesday (17 June) at approximately 2:50 pm. The specific location was identified as the ‘Tetul Tala’ spot situated on Mofiz Uddin Biswas Lane.

According to eyewitness testimonies and statements provided by the victims, video journalist Mohammad Imran Hossain and special representative Mohammad Ranjuur Rahman had arrived at the location to investigate alleged irregularities regarding the construction of a residential boundary wall belonging to an individual identified as Mohammad Reza Chowdhury.

Whilst the media personnel were gathering data and recording footage, a group of 10 to 12 individuals—led by Mohammad Reza Chowdhury and Mohammad Selim Chowdhury—confronted them. The group, armed with various domestic weapons including hoes, galvanized iron (GI) pipes, rod cutters, hammers, and iron bars, launched an unprovoked physical assault on the two journalists.

Casualties and Material Losses

During the attack, video journalist Mohammad Imran Hossain sustained a severe head injury that resulted in profuse bleeding. The perpetrators also repeatedly punched and kicked special representative Mohammad Ranjuur Rahman, subjected both men to verbal abuse, and threatened them with death. The two journalists managed to escape from the immediate vicinity to preserve their lives, later reporting that they are currently experiencing severe concerns regarding their personal security.

Emergency medical services were sought for Mohammad Imran Hossain, who was admitted to Ward No. 10 of the Kushtia 250-Bed General Hospital for specialized care.

Legal Proceedings and Media Fraternity Response

Following the incident, the aggrieved journalists stated that they are actively preparing to file a formal First Information Report (FIR) at the Kushtia Model Police Station to initiate official criminal proceedings against the named suspects.

The physical assault on working media professionals generated widespread condemnation within the regional press community. Prominent figures—including the former president of the Kushtia Press Club, Khondokar Al Mamun Sagar; former general secretary, Abu Moni Jubayed Ripon; general secretary of the EB Thana Press Club, Shaharia Imon Rubel; leadership members of the Kushtia Journalists’ Union; and the acting editor of Dainik Khaborwala, Munshi Shahin Ahmed Jewel—publicly denounced the attack.

The journalistic community has collectively called upon the local administration and law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and execute the necessary legal actions against those responsible.
