Denial of Funeral Rites for Ex-Student Leader Triggers Backlash

An uproar has erupted over allegations that authorities prevented the funeral prayers of Mahfuzul Haider Chowdhury Roton, former General Secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League, from taking place in the capital, Dhaka. Despite multiple attempts by family and associates to adjust the location, the final rites could not be conducted at either of the designated venues in the Dhanmondi area.

According to posts shared across various social media platforms, the situation unfolded around 4:30 pm on Sunday near the Dhanmandi 6/A Eidgah Mosque and the Takwa Mosque on Road 12/A. Observers and associates expressed deep concern over the heavy presence and alleged intervention of police and security personnel at both locations.

Mazharul Kabir Shoyon, an associate, alleged online that the ambulance carrying Roton’s body was intercepted by law enforcement officers. He claimed that authorities actively obstructed attempts to hold the janaza, transport the body to the deceased’s residential premises in Dhaka, or allow grieving family members and close friends to pay their final respects. In addition, assertions were made regarding pressure placed upon media outlets regarding coverage of the incident.

Expressing strong indignation, former student leader Siddiqui Nazmul Alam highlighted Roton’s long-standing connection to Dhaka, where he spent his formative student years and political career. Alam condemned the decision, pointing out that countless peers, political comrades, and relatives were deprived of the opportunity to offer prayers or view his face one last time. Other eyewitness accounts noted the visible presence of both police units and local political activists near the mosque grounds during the standoff.

Law enforcement authorities have yet to issue an official statement addressing who authorised the restriction, the exact nature of the police involvement, or the veracity of claims regarding the detention of the hearse. Independent verification regarding the final venue for the funeral prayers remains unconfirmed.

The incident has drawn sharp criticism across social media platforms, highlighting growing tensions regarding political rivalries and civil rights surrounding post-mortem honours. Clarification from official government spokespersons and police authorities remains pending as the situation continues to evolve.
