Disabled Fisherman Dies After Mob Beating in Savar, Two Arrested

A disabled fisherman has died after allegedly being beaten by a mob in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka, with police arresting two people in connection with the incident.

The incident took place on Monday evening in the Karnapara area of Ulail, within Savar municipality. Police arrested the two suspects on Tuesday afternoon as part of their investigation into the death.

The deceased was identified as 30-year-old Abul Khayer Patowary, son of Lokman Patowary, from Kalyanpur Dasadi village in Chandpur Sadar upazila. According to police, he was a fisherman and had been living in the Savar area.

The two arrested men have been identified as a rickshaw driver named Sabuj and Nuruzzaman, the owner of a garage.

Police said that Abul Khayer was allegedly subjected to a severe beating in the Ulail Kudghar area on Monday evening. Nuruzzaman and several other people were allegedly involved in the assault, according to the preliminary information gathered by investigators.

Abul Khayer sustained serious injuries in the beating. The people involved in the incident later took him to Savar Upazila Health Complex for treatment. However, doctors at the hospital declared him dead after his condition deteriorated.

Police said the people who had taken him to the hospital left the body there after doctors confirmed his death. Authorities were subsequently informed of the incident, after which police recovered the body from the hospital.

The body was later sent to the mortuary of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka for a post-mortem examination. The examination is expected to help establish the precise cause of death and provide further evidence for the ongoing investigation.

Police have not yet been able to establish the exact circumstances that led to the alleged assault. Investigators are looking into what triggered the incident and whether any dispute or other matter preceded the beating.

Nur Mohammad, inspector (investigation) at Savar Model Police Station, said a murder case had initially been filed against unidentified suspects. Following the investigation, two people were arrested in connection with the incident.

The arrests mark the first significant development in the case, although investigators have yet to disclose the specific allegations against each suspect or clarify whether others were involved. Police are expected to examine witness statements and other available evidence as they work to determine the full sequence of events.

The death has also raised concerns over the use of mob violence and the dangers of taking the law into one’s own hands. Regardless of the circumstances behind the incident, allegations of assault resulting in death are subject to investigation and legal proceedings.
