The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have apprehended 508 individuals during a coordinated, crime-suppression drive spanning 24 hours across various sectors of the capital. The sweeping operation, which focused heavily on curbing narcotics trafficking, illicit trade, and street crimes, resulted in the initiation of 50 separate criminal cases.
The comprehensive figures were officially confirmed by Niaz Mehedi, the Additional Deputy Commissioner of the DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division. He noted that the simultaneous raids were executed by several crime and detective divisions operating under the metropolitan umbrella, as part of an ongoing strategy to stabilise law and order in Dhaka’s densely populated sectors.
The anti-crime drive was distributed across the DMP’s key administrative divisions, targeting known crime hotspots and transit points. The law enforcement agencies detailed the arrests by region as follows:
Uttara Division: 137 individuals arrested
Mirpur Division: 95 individuals arrested
Tejgaon Division: 68 individuals arrested
Gulshan Division: 53 individuals arrested
Ramna Division: 52 individuals arrested
Motijheel Division: 48 individuals arrested
Wari Division: 32 individuals arrested
Lalbagh Division: 23 individuals arrested
Uttara and Mirpur divisions recorded the highest number of apprehensions, reflecting a concentrated effort by police personnel in the northern and western residential hubs of the metropolis.
During the operations, personnel recovered a substantial cache of contraband, stolen property, and smuggled goods. This included a variety of illicit substances: 1.26 kilograms of cannabis, 381 Yaba tablets, 8 grams of heroin, and 12 bottles of foreign liquor.
Beyond narcotics, officers seized physical evidence linked to local crimes, including a sharp knife, 14 mobile handsets, and 22,120 Taka in cash. Notably, the haul also featured smuggled items consisting of six sacks filled with assorted Indian homeopathic medicines, alongside packaging materials such as carbon sheets and bottle corks. Furthermore, police successfully rescued one victim during the operations, though specific details regarding the individual’s identity or the nature of their confinement have been withheld for investigative integrity.
According to senior police officials, legal proceedings against all the detained suspects are already underway. The DMP has reiterated its commitment to sustaining these regular, intensive operations to neutralise criminal networks, secure public spaces, and prevent the influx of smuggled commodities into the capital.
