Dollar Rises as Key Foreign Exchange Rates Set for 13 August

Foreign exchange rates play a vital role in Bangladesh’s economy, influencing remittances, international trade, imports, exports and a wide range of cross-border financial transactions. With more than 10 million Bangladeshis living and working abroad, the value of foreign currencies against the taka is particularly significant for families receiving remittances as well as businesses engaged in overseas transactions.

On Thursday, 13 August, the US dollar was valued at Tk 122.84, while the euro stood at Tk 144.97. The British pound was trading at Tk 166.77. These currencies remain among the most closely watched rates in Bangladesh because of their importance in international trade, travel, education, remittance flows and corporate payments.

Among major Middle Eastern currencies, the Kuwaiti dinar recorded the highest value at Tk 402.22 per unit. The Bahraini dinar stood at Tk 327.86, while the Omani rial was valued at Tk 320.25. The Saudi riyal was trading at Tk 33.00 and the United Arab Emirates dirham at Tk 33.65.

Asian currencies also showed notable differences in their value against the taka. The Malaysian ringgit stood at Tk 30.20, while the Singapore dollar was valued at Tk 96.93. One Japanese yen was equivalent to Tk 0.778, and the South Korean won stood at approximately Tk 0.08701555. The Indian rupee was valued at Tk 1.25.

Among currencies from the wider Asia-Pacific region, the Australian dollar was trading at Tk 87.41, while the New Zealand dollar stood at Tk 72.82. The Canadian dollar was valued at Tk 88.38. Meanwhile, South Africa’s rand stood at Tk 7.64.

In Europe, the Swiss franc was valued at Tk 148.76, placing it above the euro in terms of value against the Bangladeshi currency. The euro remained at Tk 144.97.

Exchange rates are not fixed and can change during the day in response to movements in international currency markets. Demand and supply for foreign currency, import and export payments, remittance inflows, central-bank policies, interest-rate movements and broader global economic conditions can all influence the value of the taka.

The rate available to customers can also vary depending on the bank or authorised money-exchange provider, the nature of the transaction and applicable charges. Buying and selling rates may differ from the indicative rates published for reference.

For people sending money abroad, receiving remittances, purchasing foreign currency for travel or education, or making international business payments, checking the latest applicable rate at the time of the transaction is therefore essential. The rates listed for 13 August should be treated as indicative figures, while the rate offered by the relevant authorised financial institution at the time of settlement will determine the actual amount exchanged.
