A 46-year-old pedestrian was killed after being struck by a speeding private car while crossing a road at the Sholashahar Polytechnic intersection in Chattogram city early Thursday morning.
The deceased was identified as Delwar Hossain, son of Nur Nabi, from Joynarayanpur in Daganbhuiyan upazila of Feni. The accident occurred at around 5:30am, when Delwar was attempting to cross the road at the busy intersection.
He sustained critical injuries in the collision and was taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for treatment. Doctors at the hospital’s emergency department examined him and subsequently declared him dead.
Abdur Rahim, officer-in-charge of Khulshi Police Station, said the private car was travelling at high speed when it hit Delwar. The accident took place before sunrise, when visibility on the road was limited by darkness. As a result, the vehicle could not be identified immediately from the accident scene.
Police later collected closed-circuit television footage from the area and began examining it to establish the identity of the vehicle involved. After reviewing the footage, investigators were able to work towards identifying the car and the person connected with it. Legal proceedings against the relevant individual are now being pursued, according to the police officer.
Nurul Alam Ashique, an inspector in charge of the Chattogram Medical College Hospital police outpost, said Delwar was brought to the hospital after being injured in the road accident at the Sholashahar Polytechnic intersection. Following an examination, doctors at the emergency department pronounced him dead. His body was subsequently placed in the hospital mortuary.
The accident has once again highlighted the risks faced by pedestrians on busy urban roads, particularly during the early hours when natural light is limited. Intersections such as the Sholashahar Polytechnic area can see both pedestrian and vehicle movement, making visibility and speed control important factors in preventing collisions.
For pedestrians, crossing a major road can become particularly hazardous when vehicles are travelling at high speed and adequate lighting is unavailable. At the same time, drivers approaching busy intersections are expected to remain alert, maintain a safe speed and be prepared for pedestrians who may need to cross the carriageway.
Road safety measures such as adequate street lighting, clearly designated pedestrian crossing points and effective speed control can help reduce the likelihood of similar incidents. Proper enforcement is also essential when a vehicle is suspected of being involved in a fatal collision.
In Delwar’s case, police are continuing efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash and complete the necessary legal process. The identification of the vehicle through CCTV footage is expected to assist investigators in determining responsibility for the fatal incident.
