An elderly woman was brutally murdered on Sunday night during a violent break-in at her home in Berkota village, situated within the Kachua upazila of Chandpur. The attackers fled the scene after plundering valuable gold jewellery and an undisclosed sum of cash. Law enforcement officials confirmed that the victim, identified as 70-year-old Fatema Begum, was entirely alone at the property when the fatal assault occurred.
Fatema Begum was the widow of the late Sadek Miyazi, a respected former official of the Ministry of Textiles and Jute. Following her husband’s passing, she had been residing independently at the Miyazi family estate. The isolation of the rural property reportedly provided the perpetrators with a perfect opportunity to execute the raid undetected under the cover of darkness.
According to local residents and police investigators, an organised gang of robbers managed to breach the perimeter of the residence during the early hours of Monday. Once inside, the intruders began ransacking cupboards and storage units, gathering gold ornaments and cash reserves. The commotion eventually woke Fatema Begum, who unexpectedly confronted the criminals in an attempt to protect her property.
Finding themselves intercepted and fearing identification, the criminals turned violent. The gang launched a frenzied physical assault on the helpless woman, repeatedly hacking her with sharp weapons before slitting her throat to prevent her from raising an alarm. The perpetrators then completed their theft and escaped into the night, leaving the victim in a pool of blood. The gruesome discovery was made the following morning by neighbours who noticed the front door ajar and entered the disrupted house out of concern.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kachua Police Station, Azizul Islam, stated that a team of officers was deployed to the scene immediately after the incident was reported. Forensic evidence was secured, and the body of the deceased was subsequently transported to the Chandpur Sadar Hospital morgue for a comprehensive post-mortem examination.
Local police have initiated a rigorous investigation to identify all individuals associated with the homicide. Acting on initial intelligence, officers detained an 18-year-old youth named Yasin, a resident of the same village, for formal questioning regarding his potential involvement or knowledge of the crime. Legal proceedings are currently under way, with the victim’s immediate family preparing to file a formal murder case. Security patrols have been temporarily increased in the Berkota area to reassure the shaken rural community.
