The incident originated on the afternoon of the preceding Saturday at a licensed country liquor shop located in the Bazir Mor area of Narsingdi town. According to police reports and the formal First Information Report, Jahid Sarkar—son of local Hotel Niraala owner Jahangir Sarkar—arrived at the establishment accompanied by several associates. The group demanded ten litres of country liquor without offering payment. When Rabbi, working behind the counter, firmly refused to hand over the stock without authorisation or payment, the confrontation escalated sharply. In an act of extreme malice, the perpetrators poured petrol over the young employee and set him ablaze before fleeing the scene.

Bystanders rushed the severely burned victim to the Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, where medical professionals immediately recognised the critical nature of his condition. He was swiftly transferred to the specialised burn institute in Dhaka, where doctors placed him in the intensive care unit. Despite five days of relentless medical intervention, his extensive injuries proved fatal. The news of his death has plunged his family and local residents into deep mourning, igniting widespread outrage over the blatant disregard for human life and safety.

Law enforcement agencies have mobilized significant resources to apprehend those responsible. Following a formal complaint lodged by the victim’s mother, Minu Begum, at the Narsingdi Sadar Model Police Station, investigators initiated a series of targeted raids. During a press briefing held on Thursday evening, local police officials confirmed that two suspects had been taken into custody. A joint operation conducted by the Sadar Model Police and the District Detective Branch led to the arrest of sixty-year-old Jahangir Sarkar from the Baniasol Balurmath area late Wednesday night. Subsequently, a second suspect identified as thirty-year-old Kazi Toufiq Ahmed, alias Pias, was apprehended from the Gabtali area.

Authorities noted that the primary suspect, Jahangir’s son Jahid Sarkar, remains at large. Police leadership has assured the public that dedicated teams are actively pursuing leads to track down the remaining fugitives and bring them to justice. Meanwhile, the community continues to grapple with the grief of losing a hardworking individual to an unprovoked and vicious assault over a petty dispute.
