In a shocking case of deception and exploitation, police in Rangpur’s Gangachara Upazila have arrested a young man named Lyon for allegedly posing as an official of the National Security Intelligence (NSI). The suspect used this false identity to forge a romantic relationship with a college student, extort large sums of money, and subject her to repeated sexual assault.
The ordeal came to light when the victim’s father formally lodged a police complaint at Gangachara Model Police Station on Wednesday, implicating Lyon alongside his parents in a calculated criminal conspiracy.
According to the police First Information Report (FIR), Lyon ingratiated himself with the college student and her family by falsely claiming to be an active-duty NSI operative. Posing as a high-ranking government security official, he dangled promises of marriage and lucrative opportunities to gain the family’s trust. Over a period of time, he systematically defrauded them of 1.05 million Bangladeshi Taka under various pretexts. Furthermore, he repeatedly took the young woman to different locations under the guise of being legally married, during which time he subjected her to non-consensual sexual relations.
The situation escalated dramatically on Tuesday morning around 8:30 AM when Lyon reportedly entered the victim’s family home uninvited and gained access to her room. Hearing the young woman’s distress cries, family members and neighbours rushed to the scene and managed to apprehend the intruder. Enraged locals administered a public beating before emergency services were alerted.
Officers from Gangachara Model Police Station swiftly arrived at the scene, rescued the suspect from the angry mob, and transferred him to Gangachara Upazila Health Complex for medical treatment. Following his discharge, he was taken into formal custody.
During a search at the scene, law enforcement officers recovered a counterfeit marriage affidavit and a forged NSI identification card from Lyon’s possession. Preliminary police investigations have revealed that Lyon is already a married man who has allegedly utilised the exact same fraudulent playbook to dupe multiple other women across different regions.
Confirming the details of the arrest, Gangachara Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdus Sabur stated that fake marriage documents and the bogus intelligence ID card had been seized as physical evidence. Lyon has been formally remanded and sent to judicial custody through the local court. Meanwhile, investigators are actively examining whether Lyon’s parents played an active role in facilitating the sophisticated fraud.
