FIFA Bans Bangladesh Forward Al-Amin for 15 Matches

Bangladesh national team forward Al-Amin has been handed a 15-match suspension by football’s world governing body, FIFA, following a disciplinary incident during a four-nation tournament in the Maldives in June. Midfielder Mirajul Islam has also received a two-match suspension over the same incident, which involved an on-field confrontation and misconduct towards the referee.

The punishment represents a significant setback for Al-Amin, who has made only two appearances for the Bangladesh national team. Given the frequency with which Bangladesh currently plays international fixtures, a 15-match ban could keep the forward away from international football for close to two years.

Such a lengthy suspension is unusual in recent Bangladeshi football. One of the country’s notable earlier cases came in 1989, when then Bangladesh captain Ilias Hossain was suspended for a year after an incident involving a referee during the South Asian Games in Pakistan.

For Al-Amin, disciplinary trouble is not entirely unfamiliar. During the 2020-21 Premier League season, he represented Arambagh Krira Sangha. Following allegations of match-fixing that led to sanctions against the club, Al-Amin was among several players who were subsequently suspended for one year.

Incident occurred against Maldives

The latest incident took place during the Diamond Jubilee Football Tournament, organised to mark 75 years of Maldivian football. Bangladesh faced the hosts in an important match on the night of 7 June, with tensions escalating during stoppage time.

The confrontation began after Maldives player Hassan Inaz went to ground following a challenge involving Bangladesh’s Piyas Ahmed during a contest for possession. Referee Sekaran Senthilnathan awarded a free-kick to Maldives, a decision that prompted protests from several Bangladesh players.

The situation quickly deteriorated. What began as a disagreement over the referee’s decision developed into pushing, confrontation and physical exchanges between members of the two sides.

Mirajul Islam was the first Bangladesh player to receive a red card after leaving the substitutes’ area to join the protest. Al-Amin was subsequently dismissed for strongly disputing the referee’s decision on the pitch. During the confrontation, he also pushed the referee, further escalating the disciplinary consequences.

Despite the heated scenes towards the end of the match, neither side managed to find a winner. The contest finished 1-1.

Major setback for Bangladesh

The 15-match suspension is particularly significant because Al-Amin is still at an early stage of his international career. With only two national-team appearances to his name, missing such a large number of fixtures could interrupt his development and make it difficult for him to establish a regular place in the side.

The absence also leaves Bangladesh’s coaching staff with another selection issue in the forward line. While Mirajul’s two-match suspension is considerably shorter, his absence will also require adjustments in midfield for the matches covered by the sanction.

The case has once again brought discipline and player conduct into focus in Bangladeshi football. Competitive matches can become heated, particularly when decisions are disputed in the closing stages, but confrontations with match officials can carry consequences well beyond the result on the pitch.

For Al-Amin, the consequences are now clear: a 15-match FIFA suspension that could keep him out of international football for a prolonged period and put his immediate national-team ambitions on hold.
