Police recovered the bloodied body of a 35-year-old man from a rice field in Habiganj’s Chunarughat Upazila on Wednesday morning, prompting a murder investigation.
The deceased was identified as Ahammad Ali Sujon, son of Dulal Mia of Gazipur Union in the upazila. His body was found in a rice field beside a paved road in Rakhi village, under Mirashi Union, at around 10am on 19 August. Police said several injury marks were visible on different parts of his body.
The discovery was first made at around 8am, when several workers were heading towards a nearby field to harvest paddy. They reportedly noticed a man lying motionless among the crops and alerted people in the surrounding area. Local residents subsequently informed Chunarughat Police Station.
A police team led by Sub-Inspector Gias Uddin went to the scene after receiving the information. Officers recovered the body from the field and carried out the necessary preliminary procedures. The presence of multiple injuries has led investigators to suspect that Sujon may have been killed, although the precise circumstances surrounding his death have yet to be established.
According to family sources, Sujon was the son-in-law of Rashid Mia, a resident of Rakhi village. After his marriage, he had been living at his in-laws’ home as a resident son-in-law. Police have not yet established whether his living arrangements had any connection with the circumstances of his death.
Chunarughat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Saiful Islam said officers had recovered Sujon’s body from the rice field after being informed of the incident. He confirmed that multiple injury marks were found on the deceased and said police initially suspected a murder.
Investigators have begun examining the circumstances that may have led to the death. The scene and surrounding areas have been inspected, while possible evidence is being considered as part of the investigation. Police are also expected to gather information from people who may have seen or heard anything unusual in the area before the body was discovered.
The authorities said preparations were under way to file a murder case. The body is expected to be sent for a post-mortem examination, which should help determine the actual cause of death and provide further forensic information. Investigators will assess the post-mortem findings alongside evidence collected from the scene and information obtained during questioning.
No arrests or confirmed motive were reported at the time of the body’s recovery. Police have also cautioned against drawing conclusions about possible suspects before the investigation is completed.
The discovery has caused concern in Rakhi village and neighbouring areas. Local residents have called for a thorough investigation and urged the authorities to identify those responsible and bring them to justice. Police said the circumstances of Sujon’s death would become clearer as the forensic examination and investigation progress.
