Police have arrested Mayjuddin Hamid, the former general secretary of Maheshpur Upazila Awami League and former chairman of Maheshpur Upazila Parishad, in Jhenaidah.
Officers apprehended him at approximately 7:32 pm on Monday, 7 September, from the Kitchen Market area of Maheshpur Municipality. According to sources within Maheshpur Police Station, the arrest was executed in connection with an ongoing criminal case filed against him at the local station.
Following his arrest, Hamid was immediately taken into police custody at Maheshpur Police Station. Law enforcement officials stated that they are thoroughly verifying the case details before proceeding with the necessary legal actions against him.
Azad Rahman, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Maheshpur Police Station, officially confirmed the arrest to the press, stating that Hamid was taken into custody based on the active case logged against his name, and that standard legal procedures will be strictly followed.
Mayjuddin Hamid is a prominent political figure in the region, having previously served as the general secretary of the Maheshpur Upazila unit of the Bangladesh Awami League. Alongside his organizational duties within the party, he also held public office as the elected chairman of Maheshpur Upazila Parishad.
In local government administrative structures across Bangladesh, the Upazila Parishad functions as the crucial middle tier of rural governance, making the position of upazila chairman pivotal in overseeing local infrastructure, government relief programmes, and public administration.
