Police have arrested four activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations in Sakhipur upazila of Tangail, in connection with a case related to the anti-discrimination movement.
The arrests were made from different parts of the upazila on Monday night (14 September). The four were taken to a court in Tangail on Tuesday afternoon (15 September), police said.
Those arrested have been identified as Rezaul Islam, joint secretary of the Gajaria Union Awami League; Niamul Haque, son of former union parishad chairman and Awami League leader Gias Uddin; Jubo League leader Atik Hasan; and Sohag Sikder.
Sakhipur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Murad Hossain confirmed the arrests. He said the four were among the unnamed accused in a case related to the anti-discrimination movement and were detained during a routine police operation.
The latest arrests came two days after a political procession was held in the Dariapur area of Sakhipur. On Sunday afternoon (13 September), a brief procession was reportedly organised by the Sakhipur upazila unit of Chhatra League. Footage of the procession later circulated on social media that evening.
The circulation of the video was followed by further police action in the area. According to the information available, a total of seven activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations have been arrested over the past two days, including the four detained on Monday night.
The four individuals arrested in the latest operation have different political and local backgrounds. Rezaul Islam holds a position in the Gajaria Union Awami League, while Niamul Haque is the son of Gias Uddin, a former union parishad chairman and Awami League leader. Atik Hasan has been identified as a Jubo League leader, while Sohag Sikder was also arrested in the same police operation.
Police have described the arrests as part of their regular operations. According to the officer-in-charge, the four were arrested as unnamed accused in a case linked to the anti-discrimination movement. The police did not provide further details in the report about the specific allegations against each individual.
The development follows heightened attention to political activities in the area after the procession in Dariapur. The video circulating on social media provided a record of the event, after which police action resulted in several arrests.
Following their detention on Monday night, the four suspects were produced before the Tangail court on Tuesday afternoon. Their cases will now proceed through the judicial process, where the allegations and any subsequent legal measures will be dealt with according to the relevant procedures.
Police said their operation in Sakhipur would continue. Murad Hossain reiterated that the arrests were part of an ongoing routine drive and that further action would be taken as the investigation and enforcement activities proceed.
