Garment Worker Murdered by Paramour Following Marriage Dispute in Siddhirganj

A young female garment worker in Siddhirganj was strangled to death by her paramour following a dispute over marriage, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) confirmed during a press briefing. The suspect, 25-year-old Abdur Razzak, also known as Aryan, has confessed to the crime in court under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

Addressing journalists at the Narayanganj PBI office on Thursday afternoon, Inspector Mintu Kumar detailed the breakthrough in the murder case of 23-year-old Sadia Akter.

Investigating officers arrested Razzak on 21 July during an operation in the Jinjira area of Keraniganj, Dhaka. Law enforcement personnel recovered a cap worn by the suspect during the crime, alongside the victim’s mobile phone. Based on statements provided during interrogation, PBI officers subsequently traced and retrieved gold jewellery belonging to Sadia, which Razzak had pawned or sold after fleeing the scene. On Wednesday, the suspect was produced before the Magistrate’s Court, where he formally recorded his judicial confession.

Sadia was found dead in her rented residence in Siddhirganj on 12 July. Initial police action saw her ex-husband, Ibrahim, arrested within four hours of the discovery under suspicion of involvement. However, deeper investigation by the PBI revealed a different sequence of events, ultimately exonerating her former spouse.

According to investigators, Sadia had divorced Ibrahim following ongoing marital discord and began living with Razzak, presenting him to neighbours as her husband to secure the tenancy. Friction escalated when Sadia began pressuring Razzak to formalise their union through marriage. The tension culminated on the night of 12 July in a fierce argument, during which Razzak strangled Sadia to death before stealing her valuables and absconding.
