Gas Blast Kills Three in Same Family

Three members of the same family have died after succumbing to burn injuries sustained in a gas leak–triggered explosion in Narayanganj’s Bandar Upazila. They were buried on Tuesday morning at a family graveyard in Daldala village under Jaria Union of Purbadhala Upazila in Netrakona.

The only surviving member of the family, 13-year-old Mimu Akhter, remains in critical condition at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.

The explosion occurred in the early hours of 11 June at a rented house in Chanpur area under Madanpur Union of Bandar Upazila. All injured family members were initially admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery for treatment.

According to hospital sources, Sultana Begum died on 12 June while undergoing treatment. She had sustained burns to approximately 90 percent of her body. Abdur Mannan died early Monday morning, followed by the death of their son Siam at around 10:00 am on the same day.

Medical records show that Abdur Mannan had 35 percent burn injuries, while Siam suffered burns to 77 percent of his body. Mimu Akhter sustained burns covering 41 percent of her body, including injuries to her airway, and remains in a critical condition in the ICU.

A child from the neighbouring household, Hazarat Ali, was also injured in the same incident and is currently receiving treatment at the same hospital.

Family members and local residents stated that Abdur Mannan worked as a vegetable vendor and lived in Narayanganj with his family due to livelihood reasons. Following the deaths, the bodies were brought to their village home on Monday night, creating a sombre atmosphere in the area. Funeral prayers were held at 9:00 am on Tuesday, after which the three deceased were buried side by side in the family graveyard.

Hospital and family sources reported that the explosion is believed to have been caused by accumulated gas inside the house. It is suspected that gas leaked from an LPG cylinder overnight, filling the room. When Sultana Begum attempted to light a stove in the early morning, a sudden explosion occurred.
