Handcuffed Suspect Escapes From Rural Police Outpost

A warrant-listed suspect has escaped from police custody while still wearing handcuffs in Jhenaidah’s Kotchandpur upazila, prompting a fresh police operation to locate and rearrest him. The incident occurred on Friday night at the Sabdarpur Police Outpost and has raised questions about security arrangements at the facility.

The escaped suspect has been identified as 28-year-old Farid Hossain, son of Hossain Ali, from Chuadanga village in Kotchandpur upazila. Police said he had been wanted in connection with a pending case and was arrested under an existing court warrant.

According to police sources, a team led by Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Abdul Quddus conducted an operation in the Bhomradanga area on Friday night. During the raid, officers arrested Farid Hossain from behind a school near the local marketplace. He was subsequently taken to the Sabdarpur Police Outpost, where he was kept in custody following his arrest.

Police said that later the same night, the suspect managed to flee the outpost despite being handcuffed. Details of how he escaped have not yet been disclosed, and no official explanation has been provided regarding the circumstances that allowed him to evade police custody.

Attempts were made to contact ASI Abdul Quddus for comment, but he could not be reached. As a result, questions surrounding the sequence of events and the security measures in place at the time of the escape remain unanswered.

Kotchandpur Police Station’s Inspector (Investigation), Ansarullah Haque, confirmed that Farid Hossain had escaped while wearing handcuffs. He said police had received information about the incident and were continuing efforts to recapture the suspect.

The investigating officer added that he was unable to confirm immediately which specific case Farid Hossain had been wanted in, although he acknowledged that the suspect had been arrested under a valid warrant. Police teams have since launched an operation to trace his whereabouts and bring him back into custody.

Escapes from police custody are generally treated as serious incidents because they may expose weaknesses in detention procedures and security protocols. Such cases are often followed by internal reviews to determine whether any negligence or procedural failures contributed to the escape. However, no official statement has yet indicated whether an internal inquiry has been initiated in connection with this incident.

Police said the search operation remains ongoing and that officers are pursuing all available leads to locate the fugitive. Authorities have also increased surveillance in surrounding areas in an effort to prevent him from leaving the locality before he can be apprehended again.
