Holy Ashura Observed Across Bangladesh With Solemnity

Bangladesh will observe Holy Ashura tomorrow, marking the 10th day of Muharram in the Islamic calendar year 1448 Hijri. The occasion carries profound religious, historical and spiritual significance for Muslims worldwide and is regarded as both a day of remembrance and a period of deep mourning.

Holy Ashura is associated with several important events in Islamic history, but its greatest significance stems from the tragedy of Karbala, one of the most defining and sorrowful chapters in the Muslim world. On the 10th of Muharram in 61 Hijri, corresponding to 680 CE, Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), along with members of his family and loyal companions, embraced martyrdom on the plains of Karbala near the Euphrates River in present-day Iraq.

Their sacrifice in defence of truth, justice and moral principles has endured through the centuries as a powerful symbol of resistance against tyranny and oppression. The events of Karbala continue to inspire millions, transcending time and geography to serve as a reminder of the importance of standing firm for righteousness even in the face of overwhelming adversity.

The Government of Bangladesh has declared a public holiday to mark the occasion. Religious organisations, mosques and community groups across the country have arranged a variety of programmes, including Qur’an recitations, religious discussions, milad mahfils, special prayers and charitable activities.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman have issued separate messages highlighting the significance of the day. In their statements, they urged citizens to embrace the values and lessons of Ashura and to work collectively towards building a peaceful, just, humane and prosperous Bangladesh. Both leaders emphasised that the ideals demonstrated at Karbala remain relevant in contemporary society and continue to offer guidance in addressing social and moral challenges.

State-owned and private television and radio broadcasters are scheduled to air special programmes focusing on the religious, historical and spiritual importance of Holy Ashura. Scholars, historians and religious leaders are expected to discuss the life, sacrifice and enduring legacy of Imam Hussain (RA), as well as the broader lessons of courage, integrity and devotion associated with the occasion.

In Dhaka and other parts of the country, members of the Shia community will observe the day with traditional mourning ceremonies and commemorative events. Tazia processions, religious gatherings and memorial programmes are being organised under heightened security arrangements.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has announced extensive measures to ensure that all Ashura-related activities are conducted peacefully and without disruption. Security personnel will be deployed along procession routes, while special traffic management plans have been introduced to minimise congestion and facilitate public movement.

DMP Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed said organisers and participants have been instructed to comply with a series of safety measures. The carrying of sharp metallic objects, weapons, flammable materials, sticks, swords, spears, bags, suitcases and suspicious packages has been prohibited during processions. Authorities have also requested participants to refrain from using high-volume sound systems, drums, fireworks and firecrackers in order to preserve the solemn atmosphere of the occasion.

Traffic diversions will remain in effect on designated routes from 10:00 am until the completion of the processions. Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes to avoid delays and ensure the smooth movement of participants.

Ahead of the observance, the Islamic Foundation organised a discussion and prayer meeting at the south veranda of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque. The event, titled “The Importance and Significance of Ashura”, brought together prominent religious scholars and officials to reflect on the historical and spiritual dimensions of the day.

Speakers at the programme stressed that the tragedy of Karbala was not merely a historical event but a timeless lesson in moral courage and ethical leadership. They noted that Imam Hussain’s (RA) unwavering commitment to justice and human dignity continues to inspire people across generations and cultures.

As Bangladesh joins the global Muslim community in observing Holy Ashura, the day serves as an opportunity for reflection on the enduring values of sacrifice, compassion, faith and justice. More than thirteen centuries after the events of Karbala, the message of Imam Hussain (RA) remains a source of inspiration for those striving to uphold truth and resist injustice in all its forms.
