India Set Chandigarh ODI Record as West Indies Face Whitewash

India set a new one-day international (ODI) record at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh, scoring 351 for seven against the West Indies to register the highest total in the format at the venue. The achievement added another milestone to India’s impressive batting record and left the visitors facing a demanding challenge as they attempt to avoid a series whitewash.

Before this match, the ground had hosted only a limited number of international fixtures involving Indian teams. The men’s side had played one Test against Afghanistan and one Twenty20 International against South Africa. In women’s cricket, the stadium had staged four ODIs, with Australia’s 282 the highest total recorded in those matches. India had come close with 281 but still suffered defeat.

India’s latest total has now established a new benchmark for men’s ODI cricket at the Chandigarh venue. The hosts won the toss and elected to bat, with KL Rahul producing an outstanding innings of 129 not out. His century provided the foundation for India’s imposing score of 351 for seven.

The result also underlined India’s consistency in reaching high totals in the 50-over format. This was the 45th occasion on which the team had scored at least 350 runs in an ODI. India have regularly produced substantial totals in recent years, reflecting the depth of their batting line-up and their ability to maintain scoring momentum across an innings.

The West Indies, meanwhile, have little room for error. India had already won the first two matches of the three-match series, securing the series before the final encounter. The visitors therefore needed victory in Chandigarh to prevent a 3-0 defeat.

Their task became considerably harder after India’s imposing total. In the previous match in Guwahati, the West Indies had scored 405 runs, yet still failed to secure victory. That defeat left them needing to overcome a formidable target once again, this time against an Indian side that had already demonstrated its ability to score heavily.

The visitors have never successfully chased a total of 350 or more in ODI cricket. Their highest successful run chase remains the 327 they reached against Ireland in 2019. That record illustrates the scale of the challenge awaiting them in Chandigarh.

Before the current tour of India, the West Indies’ highest ODI team total was 389, scored while chasing England’s 419. Their 405 against India in Guwahati subsequently surpassed that figure, but the effort was not enough to secure a win.

India also have a formidable history of posting exceptionally high scores against the Caribbean side. On 8 December 2011, they scored 418 for five against the West Indies in Indore, setting their then-record ODI total. India went on to produce totals of more than 400 in eight further ODIs. Their 406 in the second match of the ongoing series was another example of that batting strength.

With 351 already on the board in Chandigarh, India have given themselves a strong position in the final match. The West Indies must now produce the highest successful ODI run chase in their history if they are to prevent India from completing a clean sweep. A victory would require an exceptional performance from their batting line-up, while another defeat would leave them with a 3-0 series loss.
