A two-month-old girl, Saparina Jannat Mahira, has died in an incident in Hatahazari, Chattogram, where her father, Md. Osman Gani, has been accused of killing her. The matter was confirmed by Sub-Inspector Habib of Hatahazari Model Police Station at approximately 2:00 pm on Tuesday, 14 April.
The incident took place earlier that morning in the Charia Muradpur area of Ward No. 9 under Mirzapur Union in Hatahazari Upazila. The the scene was reported to be near the residence of Ibrahim Member. The deceased infant was the daughter of Osman Gani, a painter by profession, and Sumaiya Akter, who reside in the same locality.
According to police and local sources, the incident occurred between approximately 8:30 am and 9:00 am. At that time, Osman Gani reportedly asked his wife, Sumaiya Akter, to prepare tea. The infant Mahira was in her mother’s arms at the time. It is alleged that Osman Gani took the child from her mother and threw her onto the ground twice in succession, causing severe injuries.
Family members immediately responded and rushed the child to the emergency department of Hatahazari Upazila Health Complex. The attending physician declared the infant dead upon arrival.
Following the incident, the accused Osman Gani fled the scene. Police were subsequently informed, and Additional Superintendent of Police (Hatahazari Circle) Kazi Md. Tarek Aziz, along with Officer-in-Charge Md. Zahidur Rahman, visited the site to assess the situation.
An inquest report was prepared, and the body of the deceased infant was sent to the morgue of Chattogram Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Officer-in-Charge Md. Zahidur Rahman stated that a murder case is currently being processed in connection with the incident. He also confirmed that Roman, the paternal uncle of the deceased child, has been detained for questioning as part of the investigation.
Authorities have stated that the investigation is ongoing, and further legal actions will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry and the post-mortem report.
