Land Dispute Turns Deadly in Sribardi

In Sribardi upazila of Sherpur district, a violent clash between two groups over a longstanding land dispute has resulted in the death of one young man and injuries to at least 15 others. Following the incident, agitated local residents attacked and set fire to the house of a Union Parishad (UP) member accused in connection with the confrontation. The incident took place on Monday morning in Madarpur village of the upazila.

The deceased has been identified as Ashraful Islam (32), a resident of Madarpur village under Kharia Kazirchar Union of Sribardi upazila.

According to local sources, tensions had been building for a considerable period over a land-related dispute, accompanied by repeated arguments between the two sides. On the morning of the incident, the dispute escalated further, leading to heightened confrontation. At one stage, both groups became engaged in a violent clash involving locally made weapons.

During the confrontation, Ashraful Islam sustained serious injuries reportedly inflicted during the clash involving supporters of UP member Nurul Amin. Local residents subsequently rescued him and transported him to Sribardi Upazila Health Complex, where attending physicians declared him dead.

In addition to the fatality, at least 15 people were injured in the incident. The injured were admitted to Sribardi Upazila Health Complex and Sherpur District Sadar Hospital for treatment. Several of them are reported to be in critical condition.

Following the incident, the situation escalated further when relatives of the deceased and local residents attacked the residence of UP member Nurul Amin. The attackers subsequently set fire to parts of the house, causing damage to several rooms and household belongings.

Upon receiving information, police and fire service personnel arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control. Authorities later deployed additional police forces in the area to maintain law and order and prevent further escalation.

Sherpur’s Additional Superintendent of Police, Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan, confirmed the incident, stating that one person had died in the clash and that the situation was now under control. He also added that individuals involved in the incident are being identified and legal action will be taken accordingly.
