Ludo Dispute Turns Deadly as Two Sides Clash in Brahmanbaria

A dispute that reportedly began between two children over a game of ludo turned deadly in Brahmanbaria’s Bijoynagar, leaving a 53-year-old man dead and at least 15 people injured in a clash between two groups.

The deceased, Hamdu Mia, was a resident of Paikpara village under Harshpur Union in Bijoynagar Upazila. The clash took place at Banderhati area of the village at around 9am on Saturday (1 August), according to police and local sources. Several of those injured are reportedly in a serious condition.

The dispute is said to have originated on Friday afternoon when two children from Paikpara village—11-year-old Nirob, son of Hamdu Mia, and 12-year-old Yasin, son of Abul Islam—became involved in an argument while playing ludo. The disagreement reportedly escalated into a physical altercation.

Local sources said Hamdu Mia intervened after the quarrel broke out and allegedly struck Yasin with a stick. Yasin reportedly sustained an injury to his head in the incident. What initially appeared to be a minor dispute between children then reportedly fuelled tension between the two families.

By the following morning, the disagreement had escalated into a confrontation involving adults from both sides. Allegations have been made that a group of people, led by Yasin’s father Abul Islam, attacked Hamdu Mia’s home while carrying locally made weapons. The confrontation subsequently developed into a clash as supporters of both sides became involved.

During the violence, Hamdu Mia sustained serious injuries and died at the scene. His eight-year-old son Hasan was also critically injured. Among the other injured were Liton Mia, 35, Ershad, 40, Rezu Begum, Faruk Mia and Islam Mia. In total, at least 15 people from both sides were reportedly injured.

The injured were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Several are said to be receiving medical care, with some reportedly in a critical condition. The extent of their injuries has not been independently confirmed.

After receiving information about the clash, police from Bijoynagar police station went to the area and brought the situation under control. Security measures were strengthened to prevent any further escalation, as tensions remained high in the locality following the incident.

Bijoynagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Ahsan Ullah said police had reached the scene after being informed of the clash and had taken steps to restore order. Preparations were also under way to send Hamdu Mia’s body for post-mortem examination.

The police officer said investigators were examining the circumstances surrounding the clash, including the events that led to the violence and the identities of those involved. Legal action would be taken against anyone found to have been involved based on the findings of the investigation, he said.

Local residents said the incident highlighted how a seemingly minor disagreement involving children can quickly escalate when adults become involved. What began as a quarrel during a children’s game reportedly grew into a wider dispute between two groups, ultimately resulting in a death and multiple injuries.

However, the precise circumstances surrounding the attack, the nature of the weapons allegedly used and the events immediately preceding Hamdu Mia’s death have yet to be established conclusively. Police are investigating the incident, and the findings of the inquiry and post-mortem examination are expected to clarify the circumstances of the fatal clash.
