Madrasa Student Suffers Fractured Spine Following Brutal Beating in Munshiganj

In a deeply distressing incident that has sparked widespread outrage across Munshiganj, a nine-year-old female student has suffered a fractured spine after allegedly being severely beaten with a stick by her teacher at a local madrasa. The physical assault, which reportedly occurred under the pretext of the child failing to recite her lessons, has prompted formal police action against two instructors.

The victim, identified as Ankhi Akhtar, is a second-grade student at the Bage Nuraniya Hafeziya Madrasa, located in the Masjidpur Dayhata area within the Birtara Union of Sreenagar Upazila. According to the written complaint lodged by the victim’s family, the primary assault took place on 24th July. The accused teacher, Md. Safayet, allegedly subjected the young girl to a sustained physical beating using a wooden stick when she was unable to complete her academic tasks.

Following the ordeal, the child was explicitly threatened with further violence should she disclose the incident to her guardians. Paralyzed by fear, Ankhi initially concealed the assault from her parents. However, as her physical condition deteriorated rapidly due to excruciating back pain, her family questioned her, revealing the full extent of the abuse. Upon rushing her to a medical facility for urgent evaluation, attending doctors conducted clinical examinations and confirmed that the severe blunt force trauma had resulted in a fracture to her spinal column.

When the victim’s father, Md. Alamgir Khan, approached the principal of the institution, Md. Tofazzal, to report the egregious conduct, the head teacher allegedly attempted to suppress the matter and urged the family to remain silent. Outraged by the management’s deliberate inaction and faced with his daughter’s worsening health, Khan consulted local community members and filed an official complaint at the Sreenagar Police Station on Saturday, 1st August.

The revelation of the severe injury sparked intense anger among local residents, who staged a vocal protest on the madrasa premises on Friday morning, demanding immediate dismissal and legal prosecution of the perpetrators. Corporal punishment in educational institutions remains a persistent concern across the region, despite strict judicial directives from the Supreme Court of Bangladesh prohibiting all forms of physical and psychological abuse against students in academic settings.

Jewel Miah, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sreenagar Police Station, confirmed the receipt of the formal petition, stating that law enforcement officers are coordinating directly with the victim’s family. A thorough investigation has been launched, and authorities have assured that stringent legal proceedings will be executed against those found culpable.
