A 14-year-old girl was allegedly raped in Pirojpur after going to a riverbank to collect flowers. Following the incident, local police authorities arrested a 60-year-old man identified as Abdul Gani Shikdar. The incident occurred at approximately 06:30 BST on Friday, 5 June, in the Muktarkathi area of Ward No. 1 within the Pirojpur Sadar Municipality.
Incident Details and Apprehension
According to police and local sources, the teenage victim had gone to the banks of the Baleshwari River, which is located near her family residence, to gather Spanish cherry (bakul) flowers. The suspect, Abdul Gani Shikdar—a resident of Muktarkathi village and a day labourer by profession—allegedly lured the girl into his vacant house. Once inside, he reportedly intimidated the victim with various threats before assaulting her.
Hearing the girl’s screams, nearby residents rushed to the scene to rescue her. The locals subsequently detained the suspect and alerted law enforcement. A deployment from the Pirojpur Sadar Police Station arrived promptly at the location, took the suspect into custody, and transported him to the police station.
Legal Action and Official Statements
The victim’s mother filed a formal complaint at the Pirojpur Sadar Police Station, initiating a rape case against the accused. Following the registration of the case, the police formally arrested Abdul Gani Shikdar and forwarded him to judicial custody through the court system. The teenage victim is currently undergoing medical treatment.
The victim’s mother stated that the suspect had premeditated the assault, waiting in ambush before luring the girl into his empty house. She further alleged that when she went to the location after learning of the incident, the suspect threatened her with physical assault, prompting her to report the matter to the police.
Shariful Islam, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Pirojpur Sadar Police Station, confirmed that law enforcement responded immediately upon receiving the report, rescued the victim, and detained the suspect. Following the formal filing of the case by the victim’s mother, the suspect was placed under arrest and remanded to prison by the court.
