Man Arrested Following Alleged Assault of Nine-Year-Old in Savar

Residents in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka, have detained and handed over a 50-year-old man to the police following the alleged sexual assault of a nine-year-old child.

The suspect, identified as Md. Uthan Mia, also known locally as Hari, was apprehended late on Wednesday night in the Bedepara Tin Rastar Mor area. Uthan Mia, the son of the late Kishok (also recorded as Ishok) Ali, resides in the Porabari neighbourhood of Savar.

Midnight Incident Triggers Local Intervention

According to law enforcement officers, the assault took place around midnight on Wednesday, 22 July. The suspect allegedly subjected the young girl to physical violence and issued death threats to force her into silence. However, the child managed to cry out for help during the ordeal, alerting nearby residents.

Hearing her screams, neighbours rushed to the spot and intercepted the suspect. Outraged by the attack, the crowd subjected Uthan Mia to a severe beating before handing him over to responding officers from Savar Model Police Station.

Inspector (Investigation) Abdur Noor of Savar Model Police Station confirmed the arrest and outlined the immediate steps taken by the authorities.

Official Statement: “The victim’s family has formally filed a case under the Prevention of Women and Children Repression Act. The child has been sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for necessary medical examinations and forensic care.”

Medical and Legal Framework

The victim was transported to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where specialised medical personnel operate a dedicated One-Stop Crisis Centre (OCC). The facility provides critical medical treatment, forensic evaluations, and psychological support to survivors of gender-based violence and physical abuse.

Legal proceedings against the accused are moving forward under the Prevention of Women and Children Repression Act 2000 (Amended 2020), a rigorous piece of legislation designed to address severe violence against women and minors. The law mandates strict investigative timelines, forensic evidence gathering, and severe penalties upon conviction.

Broader Context: Community Vigilance and Industrial Fringe Risks

Savar, an industrial hub located roughly 20 kilometres north-west of central Dhaka, hosts a dense population of garment factory workers, low-income labourers, and informal settlements. Rapid urbanisation and crowded residential pockets—such as Bedepara and Porabari—frequently face infrastructure deficits, limited street lighting, and inadequate security measures.

Community reactions in such dense settlements often reflect growing frustration with local security challenges. While law enforcement authorities strongly advise against public violence, the prompt action of the local residents in Bedepara proved decisive in stopping the assailant and preventing his escape before police arrived at the scene.

Police officials reiterated that officers are conducting a thorough investigation to ensure all legal procedures are rigorously followed, allowing prosecutors to build a robust case for the court.
