Police in Jhenaidah have arrested a 45-year-old man in connection with the alleged rape of a woman in the Maheshpur upazila. The suspect, identified as Anisur Rahman, son of the late Sonai Mondal, hails from Gokulnagar village within the local sub-district. Law enforcement officers took him into custody on Wednesday, 16 September, following an immediate operational drive.
According to police accounts and the First Information Report (FIR), the incident took place at around 6:30 pm on Tuesday within the jurisdiction of the Swaruppur Union. The victim was reportedly assaulted inside a makeshift hut built alongside an onion field in the Korincha Khamar area.
Following the attack, the victim’s brother, 42-year-old Swapan Karmakar, filed a formal complaint at the Maheshpur Police Station under the stringent provisions of the Prevention of Oppression Against Women and Children Act. Acting on the complaint, local police launched a targeted operation to trace and apprehend the suspect, securing his arrest as the principal accused named in the case file.
Confirming the arrest, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Maheshpur Police Station, Md. Azad Rahman, stated that legal formalities were underway to produce the suspect before the court. In tandem with the arrest, police transferred the victim to a regional hospital to undergo essential medical examinations and receive clinical care. Standard legal procedures require prompt medical evaluations in sexual offence cases to gather physical evidence for forensic evaluation, which serves as crucial material during judicial proceedings.
Under Bangladeshi law, registering an official case, securing prompt medical evaluation for the survivor, and conducting a thorough investigation are key components of the legal framework surrounding crimes against women and children. Authorities noted that while an arrest has been made, the ultimate determination of guilt rests on the outcome of the ongoing police investigation and subsequent judicial trials, as an accused remains innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
