Mason Dies While Breaking Up Workers’ Fight in Kamrangirchar

A 35-year-old mason died after reportedly being caught in a scuffle while trying to stop two workers from fighting at a construction site in Kamrangirchar, Dhaka, on Thursday morning.

The incident occurred at around 8am on 23 July at a building under construction on Road No. 18 in the Mahadinagar area of Kamrangirchar. The deceased, identified as Shakib, was working as a mason at the site and was living in the same neighbourhood.

According to his colleague Munsur Ali, Shakib was working on the third floor of the building when two workers, identified as Jahangir and Yasin, became involved in an argument over work-related issues. The disagreement reportedly escalated rapidly, with the two men getting into a physical fight.

Shakib apparently intervened in an attempt to stop the confrontation. During the ensuing scuffle, he was reportedly caught amid punches and physical pushing. He then collapsed to the ground and became unconscious.

His colleagues subsequently rescued him and rushed him to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Doctors examined him after his arrival but declared him dead at around 9.20am.

The circumstances surrounding the death were subsequently brought to the attention of the authorities. Inspector Mohammad Faruk, in-charge of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost, confirmed the incident.

He said Shakib’s body had been kept at the hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination. The relevant police station had also been informed of the matter, he added.

Shakib was originally from Bhatirtek village in the Maijdee area of Noakhali. He had moved to Dhaka for work and was residing in Mahadinagar, where he was employed at the construction site.

The incident has drawn attention to the risks faced by workers at construction sites, where physically demanding work, crowded conditions and disputes among labourers can sometimes create dangerous situations. However, the exact medical cause of Shakib’s death will be clearer after the post-mortem examination.

Police are expected to examine the circumstances that led to the altercation and Shakib’s subsequent collapse. The accounts of the workers present at the site may also help establish precisely what happened during the confrontation.

The death has left Shakib’s colleagues and acquaintances shocked, as the mason had reportedly stepped into the dispute in an attempt to prevent the situation from escalating further. His body remains at the hospital morgue pending the post-mortem process.
