A total of eight children have died from measles and related complications across the country in the past 24 hours, according to the Directorate General of Health Services. During the same period, 1,092 new suspected cases were recorded, underscoring the continuing severity of the nationwide outbreak.
A press release issued on Monday (8 June) from the health control room confirmed that of the eight fatalities reported within the last day, seven were classified as suspected measles-related deaths, while one death was confirmed as directly attributable to the disease. Health officials also noted that the outbreak has persisted at scale since mid-March, placing sustained pressure on healthcare facilities.
Between 15 March and 8 June, the cumulative number of suspected measles cases has reached 80,104 nationwide. Over the same period, confirmed infections stand at 9,779 cases. Authorities have also recorded a significant number of hospital admissions and recoveries linked to the outbreak, reflecting both the spread of the disease and the ongoing medical response.
In terms of mortality, a total of 536 children have died from suspected measles-related causes since 15 March, while confirmed measles has accounted for 92 deaths during the same timeframe. Health officials emphasise that these figures include both laboratory-confirmed cases and clinically suspected cases pending verification, which is common in large-scale outbreak surveillance.
In the past 24 hours alone, 93 new confirmed measles cases were reported. The cumulative number of suspected cases requiring hospitalisation since 15 March has risen to 65,237, while 61,278 patients have been discharged following recovery. The data indicates that although a substantial number of children have received treatment and recovered, the rate of new infections and fatalities remains concerning.
Public health specialists continue to stress the importance of vaccination, early diagnosis, and timely treatment to reduce complications and prevent further loss of life. Hospitals across affected regions remain on alert as health authorities monitor the situation closely.
