Three separate fire incidents swept through different areas of Gazipur between dawn and 10 am on Monday, 1 December, causing extensive damage, though no casualties were reported. The fires affected Majukhan in Tongi, Ambag Purbo Para under Konabari Police Station, and the Chandra Polli Bidyut Dighi Par area of Kaliakair Municipality.
According to Fire Service officials, the first fire broke out in a cotton warehouse in Majukhan, rapidly spreading to two neighbouring warehouses. Four fire units responded promptly and managed to bring the blaze under control within an hour, but all three warehouses were completely destroyed.
Shortly before 9 am, a jhut (scrap) warehouse owned by Palash Mia in Ambag Purbo Para caught fire. Again, four Fire Service units were deployed, taking just over an hour to control the blaze. The warehouse’s stored materials, however, were entirely lost.
Around 9:30 am, a tin-shed colony in Chandra Polli Bidyut Dighi Par went up in flames, destroying 80 rooms. Most residents, who are factory and garment workers, were away at work and could not save any of their belongings. Firefighters brought the fire under control after approximately ninety minutes.
Mohammad Mamun, Deputy Director of Gazipur Fire Service, confirmed that all three fires had been extinguished successfully, and fortunately, no injuries or fatalities occurred. Investigations are underway to determine the causes and calculate the total extent of the damage.
| Area | Type of Property | Fire Units Deployed | Duration | Damage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Majukhan, Tongi | Cotton warehouses (3) | 4 | 1 hour | All warehouses completely burnt |
| Ambag Purbo Para | Jhut warehouse | 4 | Just over 1 hour | Entire materials destroyed |
| Chandra Polli Bidyut Dighi Par | Tin-shed colony (80 rooms) | 4 | 90 minutes | 80 rooms destroyed; residents’ belongings lost |
Authorities have urged residents and business owners to ensure proper fire safety measures, particularly in industrial and densely populated residential areas, to prevent similar incidents in the future. The Fire Service continues to investigate the specific causes of each fire.
These incidents highlight the vulnerability of Gazipur’s industrial and residential zones to rapid fire outbreaks, especially in early hours when many people are away from their homes or workplaces.
