Bangladesh is poised for significant respite from the stifling humidity and sweltering conditions that have gripped the nation. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has announced that an active monsoon system is set to trigger widespread and prolonged rainfall across the country over the next five days, starting today, 5 July.
According to a comprehensive weather bulletin issued on Sunday by senior BMD meteorologist Dr Md Omar Farooq, the imminent meteorological shift will effectively neutralise the mild heatwave currently sweeping through various regions. Daytime temperatures are projected to plunge by up to $3^\circ\text{C}$ initially, bringing a welcome drop in thermal discomfort for millions of citizens.
The seasonal monsoon trough is expected to strengthen considerably, delivering unstable weather conditions marked by gusty winds, frequent lightning strikes, and light to moderate precipitation across all eight administrative divisions.
For the initial 24-hour period, the BMD reports that most parts of the Mymensingh, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong, and Sylhet divisions will experience wet weather, with several areas bracing for medium-heavy to ultra-heavy downpours. Meanwhile, numerous districts across the Rangpur, Rajshahi, and Dhaka divisions are also scheduled to receive substantial rainfall.
The areas currently enduring the effects of the mild heatwave include:
Entire Division: Rangpur
Specific Districts: Rajshahi, Pabna, Naogaon, Dhaka, Kishoreganj, Tangail, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Rangamati, Chandpur, Feni, Cox’s Bazar, and Chuadanga.
Meteorologists confirm that this thermal stress will gradually dissipate as the precipitation intensifies, leading to a minor reduction in nocturnal temperatures as well.
The prolonged wet spell is forecast to persist well into the week, altering the microclimate across the deltaic nation.
Monday, 6 July: The weather pattern is expected to mirror Sunday’s dynamics. The heavy concentration of rain will remain focused over Mymensingh, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong, and Sylhet. Day and night temperatures across the country are predicted to remain relatively stable during this period.
Tuesday, 7 July to Thursday, 9 July: The monsoon’s coverage will expand dramatically. The BMD notes that from Tuesday onwards, the majority of locations within all eight divisions—Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong, and Sylhet—will experience consistent light to moderate showers, punctuated by isolated torrents of ultra-heavy rainfall. Daytime temperatures may experience a further slight decline on Tuesday before plateauing through Thursday.
In Bangladesh, the southwest monsoon typically peaks between June and September, acting as the primary source of the country’s annual rainfall. While the anticipated downpours offer a critical reprieve from summer heatwaves and are vital for agricultural sectors—particularly for the cultivation of seasonal crops—the transition often presents governance challenges.
Urban centres, particularly the capital city of Dhaka and the commercial hub of Chittagong, frequently grapple with waterlogging and severe traffic disruptions during periods of ultra-heavy rainfall due to stressed drainage infrastructure. Additionally, authorities routinely monitor low-lying and hilly regions, such as Rangamati and Cox’s Bazar, for potential flash floods and landslides during sustained monsoonal deluge cycles. Citizens in the affected divisions have been advised to exercise caution during periods of severe lightning and gusty winds.
