An armed security guard and two congregation members were fatally shot during a mass shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego, California. The guard, Amin Abdullah, is credited with preventing further loss of life by engaging the perpetrators and initiating an emergency lockdown. The incident occurred on Monday, 18 May 2026, just before midday prayers at the county’s largest mosque complex, which also houses Bright Horizon Academy.
Timeline and Tactical Intervention
The two assailants, identified as Cain Lee Clark, aged 17, and Caleb Liam Vazquez, aged 18, approached the mosque complex equipped with tactical armor, handguns, and rifles. As they rushed towards the entrance, Amin Abdullah intercepted them in the parking lot. Abdullah fired his weapon, striking one of the gunmen and disrupting their advance.
During the confrontation, Abdullah used his radio transceiver to transmit an active shooter alert to the attached school administrators. This warning triggered immediate lockdown protocols, allowing approximately 140 children attending classes—located within 15 feet of the attackers—to secure themselves behind locked doors. Abdullah was fatally shot during the exchange.
Two other men, identified as Mansour Kaziha and Nader Awad, were also killed in the parking lot. Police reports indicated that Kaziha and Awad were on the telephone alerting emergency dispatchers and actively drew the gunmen’s attention away from the crowded main prayer areas, limiting the casualties to the exterior grounds.
Police Response and Investigation
The San Diego Police Department had already deployed units to the surrounding Clairemont neighborhood prior to the attack. Approximately two hours earlier, the mother of the 17-year-old suspect had contacted the police to report that her son was missing, suicidal, and had taken her vehicle alongside several firearms registered to the household.
Upon receiving the 911 distress call from the Islamic Center, officers arrived within seconds. Realising law enforcement was arriving, the two suspects fled the immediate perimeter in their vehicle. They were discovered dead from self-inflicted gunshot wounds inside the car a few blocks away. No police officers discharged their weapons during the incident.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and local police are treating the mass shooting as a targeted hate crime. Search warrants executed at three residential properties associated with the suspects yielded more than 30 firearms, a crossbow, and anti-Islamic writings. Investigators also recovered an ideological manifesto containing religious and racial hate rhetoric from the vehicle.
Community and Official Tributes
Amin Abdullah, also known as Brian Climax, was a father of eight children and had served as the resident security officer at the Islamic Center since approximately 2019. On Tuesday evening, a community memorial vigil was held, where his daughter, Hawa Abdullah, stated that her father envisioned a united community overcoming prejudice.
| Individual / Agency | Institutional Role | Official Statement / Tribute |
| Scott Wahl | San Diego Police Chief | “His actions, without a doubt, delayed, distracted, and ultimately deterred those two individuals from gaining access.” |
| Taha Hassane | Imam, Islamic Center of San Diego | “If not for him, the carnage would be much worse. He sacrificed his life; they are our martyrs.” |
| Tazheen Nizam | CAIR-San Diego Executive Director | “Amin was loved by everyone. He greeted everyone with a smile. He is a true martyr and a hero.” |
| Todd Gloria | Mayor of San Diego | “These shooters do not represent our city. These three Muslim citizens carry our true identity.” |
| JD Vance | White House Representative | “Political violence is completely unacceptable in the United States. We must speak, not shoot.” |
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) noted that the shooting occurred amidst a record surge in reported anti-Muslim bias complaints nationally. Secular and religious rights groups have established a dedicated memorial fund for the families of the victims, which has raised significant financial support from the public following the tragedy.
