Police in Narsingdi have arrested a forty-two-year-old man for allegedly murdering his wife and burying her body in a secret grave. Authorities are currently preparing to exhume the remains from a local cemetery in the presence of an executive magistrate.
The suspect, Sharif Mia, was detained on Wednesday night from his father-in-law’s residence in Noakanda village, located within the Kathalia Union of Madhwadi. His wife, thirty-nine-year-old Hosne Ara Begum, was the daughter of local resident Rahman Mia. Sharif hailed from Bhagirathpur village and earned a living working at a tea stall near the Madhwadi cattle market.
According to preliminary details released by the Madhwadi police station, the incident unfolded following a domestic dispute on the night of August 17. At around 8:00 pm, an argument broke out between the couple over family matters. Sharif admitted during police questioning that he struck his wife during the altercation, causing her to fall heavily against a tubewell and lose consciousness. Rather than seeking urgent medical assistance for the injured woman, he chose to conceal her body inside their home.
The cover-up continued the following night. Under the cover of darkness after 10:00 pm on August 18, Sharif carried his wife’s lifeless body on his shoulders to a nearby graveyard. After burying the remains in secret, he returned home and spun a fabricated story for neighbours and relatives, claiming that Hosne Ara had left the house in anger.
The deception took a brazen turn on the afternoon of August 19. Sharif accompanied his father-in-law to the Madhwadi police station, attempting to file a formal missing person general diary. However, officers grew suspicious immediately, noting his nervous demeanor and inconsistent statements. Instead of accepting the routine diary, police instructed him to submit a written complaint, after which he returned to his father-in-law’s home.
Law enforcement officers maintained surveillance on Sharif due to persistent doubts about his story. Later that night, a police team detained him and brought him to the station for intensive questioning. Under sustained interrogation, Sharif broke down and confessed to both the killing and the clandestine burial, disclosing the exact location of the grave.
Officer-in-Charge Md Kamal Hossain of Madhwadi police station confirmed that the husband’s suspicious actions at the station triggered a closer investigation. Following the confession, police secured the burial site. Authorities are now awaiting the arrival of an executive magistrate to oversee the formal exhumation.
Investigators are continuing to examine how a domestic dispute escalated into a fatality, alongside the premeditated efforts to stage a disappearance. Legal proceedings and a post-mortem examination will follow once the remains are recovered.
What steps can community leaders take to identify and intervene in volatile domestic disputes before they turn fatal?
