Narsingdi Man Shot Dead in Home Amid Long-Running Dispute

A 55-year-old man was shot dead after armed assailants allegedly entered his home in Raipura, Narsingdi, on Sunday morning, reportedly following a long-standing local dispute. Three others were injured in the incident in the Sadaragarkandi area of Chanpur Union.

The deceased was identified as Momen Mia, son of the late Dhan Mia of the area. The injured were identified as Mobarak, 65, son of the late Khalek Mia; Nazmul Hossain, 30, son of Shahid Mia; and Ruhul Amin, 37, son of Quddus Mia. They were receiving treatment at Raipura Upazila Health Complex.

According to relatives of the deceased and local residents, a dispute had been continuing for some time between two rival groups, locally known as the Farid group and the Momen Chairman group. The two sides had previously been brought together in an attempt to settle their differences through mediation involving a local Member of Parliament. However, tensions reportedly resurfaced later.

Local residents alleged that members of the Farid group entered Momen Mia’s home on Sunday morning carrying locally made weapons and launched a sudden attack. During the assault, Momen was shot in the head and leg, leaving him critically injured. Three others were also wounded in the violence.

Momen was subsequently rescued and taken to Raipura Upazila Health Complex. However, doctors declared him dead after he was brought to the hospital.

Dr Binita, a physician in the emergency department of Raipura Upazila Health Complex, said Momen was brought in covered in blood. His pulse and blood pressure could not be detected at the time of admission. The doctor said it was initially suspected that he had died from severe blood loss before reaching the hospital.

Confirming the incident, Raipura police station officer-in-charge Mujibur Rahman said a clash between two groups had taken place in the Sadaragarkandi area of Chanpur. One person, identified as Momen Mia, was killed after sustaining gunshot wounds, while several others were injured, including people who had also been shot.

Following the violence, additional police personnel were deployed in the area to prevent any further escalation and maintain public order. The incident has heightened concern among local residents, particularly because it reportedly stemmed from a dispute that had persisted for a considerable period despite an earlier attempt at mediation.

Police are monitoring the situation and taking steps to establish the circumstances surrounding the clash and identify those responsible for the shooting. Further legal action is expected to follow the investigation. The latest incident also underscores the continuing risk of renewed violence when long-standing local disputes remain unresolved.
