Brazilian forward Neymar has found himself at the centre of controversy once again after being sent off during Santos’ 1-1 draw against Bahia in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A. The dismissal followed an exchange with Bahia midfielder Rodrigo Nestor, during which Neymar covered his mouth with his hand while speaking to his opponent. A subsequent review by the video assistant referee (VAR) led to a straight red card, leaving the Santos star furious with the decision.
The incident overshadowed a dramatic finish at Vila Belmiro, Santos’ home ground, where the hosts rescued a point with a goal in the dying moments of stoppage time. It also left the Brazilian club facing the prospect of being without one of its most prominent attacking players for upcoming fixtures.
Bahia took the lead in the 39th minute through defender Luciano Juba. His goal put the visitors in a promising position, forcing Santos to chase an equaliser for much of the contest. The home side struggled to break through Bahia’s defence during normal time, but Luan Peres Petroni struck in the final moments of added time to secure a 1-1 draw and prevent defeat.
Yet the late equaliser was quickly overshadowed by Neymar’s dismissal. The incident occurred just before the second half began, when the forward exchanged words with Nestor. Neymar covered his mouth with his hand as he spoke, prompting a complaint from the Bahia player.
Referee Sávio Pereira Sampaio had been looking in another direction when the exchange took place. Following Nestor’s complaint, the incident was reviewed using VAR, after which the referee decided to send Neymar off with a straight red card.
The precise words exchanged between the players were not established in the account of the incident. Nevertheless, Neymar strongly disputed the decision and accused his opponent of exaggerating what he described as a harmless interaction.
Speaking as he left the pitch, the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain forward insisted that the exchange had begun as light-hearted banter.
“We were having fun on the pitch, laughing at each other. At that moment, I went over to speak to Nestor. I accidentally put my hand over my mouth, and I hadn’t even opened my mouth to say anything when he raised his hand and started making a scene,” Neymar said.
He then expressed his anger in even stronger terms, declaring: “This is one of the dirtiest tricks in football! And I’ll deal with Nestor.”
Neymar had already received a yellow card earlier in the match after throwing the ball at an opposing player’s chest. The subsequent dismissal meant that his disciplinary problems became a major talking point, despite Santos managing to avoid defeat.
The consequences could extend beyond the Bahia fixture. According to the match report, Neymar will miss Santos’ upcoming Wednesday match against Palmeiras because of the red card. He is also expected to be unavailable for the following Monday’s meeting with Red Bull Bragantino after accumulating three yellow cards during the current campaign.
His potential absence from both fixtures represents a significant concern for Santos. Neymar’s technical ability, creativity and attacking experience make him an influential figure in the side, but disciplinary setbacks can deprive a team of those qualities at crucial moments in the season.
For Santos, the late equaliser offered some relief after a difficult evening. However, the controversy surrounding their star forward has shifted attention away from the result and towards the circumstances of the dismissal.
The incident also highlights the role VAR can play in modern football, particularly when referees have not directly witnessed an exchange between players. While the technology can help officials review contentious moments, decisions involving verbal confrontations and gestures can still generate disagreement among those involved.
Neymar, for his part, remains convinced that the situation was misrepresented. His frustration was clear as he left the field, although his objections did not change the outcome of the review.
Santos must now prepare for their next fixtures while accounting for Neymar’s expected absence. The draw against Bahia prevented a home defeat, but the red card has created a fresh challenge for the club and ensured that the controversy will remain a major talking point surrounding the Brazilian forward.
