A habitual offender facing eight criminal charges was hacked to death by assailants in Jessore on Wednesday night, 22 July. The killing took a dramatic turn after a suspect, arrested in connection with the crime, claimed he attacked the victim after catching him attempting to rape his wife.
The deceased, 35-year-old Shariful Islam Jitu, was the son of Sirajul Islam from the Barandipara Mollapara neighbourhood in Jessore town. Known locally as a career criminal, Jitu had a long-standing police record spanning multiple offences across the district.
The violent encounter unfolded at around 11:00 pm at the Fultala intersection in the town’s Barandipara district. Witnesses reported seeing a group of men corner Jitu before hacking him repeatedly with sharp weapons and leaving him critically injured on the road. Concerned local residents alerted the national emergency service by dialling 999, prompting a swift response from the Kotwali Police Station. Officers arrived at the scene, rescued the heavily bleeding victim, and rushed him to hospital.
Dr Kazi Masum Reza, an emergency medical officer at the Jessore 250-Bed General Hospital, stated that police brought Jitu to the facility around midnight. Given the severity of his wounds and a rapid decline in his condition, doctors administered emergency first aid and advised an immediate transfer to Dhaka for specialized treatment. However, Jitu succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Thursday morning as the ambulance reached Narail en route to the capital. His body was subsequently returned to the Jessore hospital morgue at around 3:00 am for a post-mortem examination.
Police have detained a suspect, identified as Suman Mia, for questioning. Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations) Mirajul Islam confirmed the arrest, noting that Suman alleged he slashed Jitu after discovering him attempting to assault his wife.
Investigators are scrutinizing Suman’s claim while simultaneously exploring whether personal vendettas or rivalries within the local underworld contributed to the fatal attack. Multiple law enforcement teams have been deployed across the area to track down other individuals involved, with formal murder charges currently being processed at Kotwali Police Station.
