A suspected cattle thief was beaten to death by an enraged mob in Kaliganj upazila of Jhenaidah district early Sunday morning. Another suspect sustained critical injuries during the incident and is currently undergoing hospital treatment in a precarious condition, drawing renewed attention to the persistent issue of vigilante violence in rural areas.
The incident unfolded around 3:00 am in Badurgachha village within the upazila. According to local accounts and police reports, a group of unidentified individuals broke into the homestead of a local widow named Nilufar Yasmin under the cover of darkness with the intention of stealing cattle. Awakened by suspicious noises, Yasmin raised the alarm by screaming for help. Her frantic cries quickly alerted neighbours, who rushed to the property and immediately gave chase to the intruders.
Mob Justice and Police Intervention
Following a thorough search of the surrounding area, villagers managed to apprehend two suspects. However, the situation quickly escalated as an agitated crowd descended upon the detained men, subjecting them to a severe beating. The intensity of the assault proved fatal for one of the suspects, who succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The second individual sustained severe trauma and was rescued by arriving authorities just in time.
Law enforcement officers from Kaliganj Police Station arrived promptly at the location following emergency distress calls, bringing the volatile situation under control.
