Police have retrieved the semi-decomposed body of an unidentified middle-aged man from the Bangshi River in Dhamrai, on the northwestern outskirts of Dhaka.
The discovery took place late on Sunday night near the Depashai Nayapara sports ground, situated in the Sombhag Union of the upazila. Local residents first spotted the corpse drifting near the riverbank and alerted the authorities. A team from Dhamrai Police Station responded promptly to the call, recovering the floating remains shortly before midnight and bringing them to the station.
Officers noted that prolonged exposure to the water had left the body severely decomposed, making immediate identification impossible. On Monday morning, law enforcement personnel transferred the corpse to the morgue at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka for a detailed post-mortem examination. Forensic experts expect the autopsy to clarify the exact time and cause of death, helping investigators determine whether the incident was accidental, a case of drowning, or tied to foul play.
Dhamrai Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Shahidul Islam confirmed that legal proceedings have been initiated in connection with the recovery. To establish the victim’s identity, local police requested assistance from the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI). Specialist forensic teams are expected to use fingerprint analysis and biometric technology to help match the deceased against national databases.
The Bangshi River, a prominent waterway flowing through the industrial and rural zones of Dhamrai, occasionally sees such grim discoveries due to strong currents carrying floating debris and objects from upstream areas. The recovery has caused considerable concern among nearby villagers, who expressed alarm over the mysterious circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
Investigators are currently gathering information on recent missing persons reports filed across neighboring police stations in the Dhaka district. Authorities stated that once the individual is identified, the body will be handed over to his relatives following the completion of required legal formalities.
