Police in Ramganj, Lakshmipur, have seized an abandoned bag containing approximately 24 kilogrammes of lead bullet tips and metallic projectile remnants from a cemetery adjacent to a local mosque.
The recovery took place on Monday morning near the Baitul Nur Jame Mosque in Lamchar village, situated within the Lamchar Union of the upazila. Worshippers and local residents noticed an unattended bag lying within the cemetery grounds early in the day. Given the location next to a prominent place of worship, the stray package immediately raised suspicion, prompting locals to alert the authorities rather than handle the object themselves.
Upon receiving the report, a team from the Mohammadia Bazar Police Investigation Centre moved quickly to secure the scene and confiscate the container. On opening it, officers discovered a massive stash of spent projectile casings and lead heads weighing roughly 24 kg in total.
Sub-Inspector Taj Uddin, officer-in-charge at the Mohammadia Bazar Police Investigation Centre, confirmed that preliminary inspections identified the materials as used lead ammunition tips and metallic fragments. Investigators suspect the scrap was harvested from a military or civilian firing range, or potentially stolen, before being abandoned by culprits desperate to evade law enforcement detection.
Unlawful possession and illicit trading of scrap metal from munitions present severe public safety risks. Lead projectiles hold significant black-market value, as recycled heavy metals are often melted down or repurposed for illegal arms manufacturing. Local law enforcement officers have launched a thorough inquiry to trace the exact origin of the consignment, determine how the materials reached the burial site, and establish whether any criminal networks are linked to the haul.
The incident created brief concern among residents in Lamchar village, but swift police action brought the situation under control. The seized materials remain in police custody pending technical examination. Authorities have urged citizens to report any untoward packages immediately and refrain from touching suspicious objects to preserve crucial evidence.
